Modern Methods of Construction Education (MMC Edu) is a national platform that connects education and industry to advance construction training in Canada. It is a key outcome of the Mass Timber Training Network: Advancing Trades for a Sustainable Future (MTAT) project, which brings together a national network to advance wood as a low-carbon building material by addressing major barriers to mass timber adoption across the country.
Led by the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in partnership with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) through the Green Construction Through Wood Program (GC Wood), the MTAT project focuses on education and training as a key vehicle for reducing barriers and preparing the next generation of the workforce. MMC Edu serves as a shared platform where network members, industry partners, and educators can exchange knowledge and access resources that support innovation, sustainability, and workforce readiness across Canada.
What’s Available on Modern Methods of Construction Education
The MMC Edu platform includes a directory of available training opportunities and serves as a hub for the future release of key resources, including a curriculum framework to support the integration of mass timber and off-site construction into the trades and related disciplines, as well as faculty development and teaching resources.
These features are intended to address critical challenges in the construction sector, including skills shortages, limited access to standardized training, and gaps in the broader off-site and prefabricated construction ecosystem.
Building Momentum Through Collaboration
MMC Edu builds on the momentum established through the MTAT project, including partnerships with institutions and organizations across Canada that support collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the future adoption of shared training resources.
Through a series of national working sessions, MTAT network members have played a key role in identifying and validating core competencies and educational pathways needed to prepare future tradespeople for modern construction methods, including mass timber, off-site, and prefabricated approaches.
Looking Ahead: The Training Framework
The next phase of the MTAT project focuses on developing practical resources and insights to support education, training, and industry adoption across Canada. A key outcome of this work is a national training framework, developed and validated in collaboration with network stakeholders and shared through the MMC Edu platform.
The training framework provides in-depth guidance on integrating mass timber training into the carpentry trade, outlining standardized approaches and supporting resources while remaining flexible across programs and regions. The framework will be released in March 2026. Updates will be shared through the MMC Edu website (mmceducation.ca), where readers can join the email list to stay informed.
