BAILEYVILLE, Maine — A wood pulp mill in Downeast Maine faces a fine of nearly $800,000 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) following a federal investigation into a toxic gas release that resulted in the deaths of two workers. OSHA found that Woodland Pulp were performing a cold-weather shutdown that caused exposure to high concentrations of deadly, uncontrolled, hydrogen sulfide gas. …In addition, OSHA investigated a March 7 chemical fire at Woodland Pulp that started after the mill released 4,400 gallons of 50% hydrogen peroxide that mixed with wood pulp that had accumulated on the ground. …OSHA proposed $794,456 in penalties. Woodland Pulp has 15 business days from receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. …Earlier this month, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) released an investigation update.
