The Okanagan Forest Task Force is calling on the premier to do something about people living in the backcountry. The volunteer group that has been cleaning up behind illegal encampments and those dumping trash in the Central Okanagan wilderness for years has written an open letter to Premier David Eby. ​“We are fed up with living under a shadow of perpetual fear due to the public safety risks these encampments pose, while they continue to remain and operate illegally on Crown land in close proximity to our homes and communities,” said the letter. OFTF founder Kane Blake has frequently posted about putting out campfires left burning in the backcountry. Along with the letter, the group has sent photos to the premier showing someone operating an ATV in the area of Postill Lake Forest Service Road near Kelowna, in direct violation of the province’s recent ban on off-road vehicle use on Crown land.
