ATHENS, Alabama — U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville  addressed a growing trade war between the United States and Canada while speaking Wednesday at the Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce’s 2026 Washington Update. According to Tuberville, a member of the Senate Ag Committee, the Canadian government has severely undercut America’s forestry industry in recent years, contributing to the current conflict. “Canada has been a big problem for us,” said Tuberville. “Our foresters, people who are in the sawmill business and the lumber business, have been to see me several times in the last few years because Canada subsidizes its lumber business up there. The government puts money in that they can’t afford, and they’re shipping lumber into our country, in our state, and it’s killing our foresters. Our lumber’s not worth anything.” Tuberville hopes that recent additional tariffs on Canadian goods will help relieve the tense economic situation for many American industries.
