AXIS, Alabama — One person died in a workplace incident at the Canfor Southern Pine facility. The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office responded to the facility. Investigators said the victim, identified as James Wiley, was found unconscious and unresponsive by a co-worker near a large machine. They said it appeared he was pulled into a close conveyor belt system. The company acknowledge the employee’s death. In a statement, Canfor said: “Operations at the facility have been suspended and a thorough investigation is underway. As we process this terrible loss, we are focused on supporting the employee’s family and our employees across our operations.” Officials said Wiley worked on the maintenance team and was familiar with the equipment. Detectives said there are no signs of four play or criminal activity. The company says OSHA has been notified about the accident, per protocols. The facility manufactures forest products and wood.
