Inspection inefficiencies, lack of skilled labour are barriers to housing growth

In the 11 years since launching, Element5 has watched with interest the surge in popularity of building with mass timber. The company produces cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (glulam) components that go into residential, industrial, institutional and commercial facilities across Canada and in the U.S. As demand has grown, it’s expanded its expertise to make it easier for builders to choose mass timber in their designs, said Lee Scott, Element5’s director of sales, during a recent webinar. …The Sept. 24 online panel at which Scott spoke was an initiative of Canadian Wood Council, Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and WoodWorks. …Leah Nord, a consultant on the Forest Products Association of Canada’s Talent Pipeline Management program, believes the issue of homebuilding is directly tied to the labour force. …She lauded the federal government’s Housing and Workforce Construction Alliance and the Talent Pipeline Management Pilot led by FPAC — as moving in the right direction.
