Employment counselling, information sessions and a job fair are being organized for workers affected by the planned temporary closure of the AV Nackawic pulp mill, but questions remain about what the closure means for their employment and financial security. AV Nackawic announced a shutdown scheduled for Nov. 4, putting approximately 350 workers out of jobs, saying the dissolving-pulp market prices have not kept pace with production costs. A committee that includes AV Nackawic as well as union representatives, the federal and provincial governments and community leadership met Friday to “focus on making sure there is a co-ordinated approach among all stakeholders to ensure the affected workers are well supported during the planned closure. The focus will then turn to finding solutions and developing ideas to ensure a quick and lasting economic recovery for the region,” according to a news release from the province.
