Mt. Hayes wildfire near Ladysmith won’t spread any farther, says B.C. Wildfire Service

Nanaimo News Bulletin

Category: Forest Fires
Region: Canada, Canada West

The wildfire near Ladysmith isn’t expected to burn any more forest on Mt. Hayes. B.C. Wildfire Service posted on social media in the late afternoon Sunday, Aug. 22, that the fire is now classified as being held. “A fire that is ‘being held’ has received sufficient suppression action that it is not likely to spread further under forecasted conditions,” noted the post. B.C. Wildfire Service said holding the fire is an “important milestone,” but noted that crews will have lots of “hard, physical work” ahead of them dealing with hot spots and turning over and wetting down earth as the fire has burned into the ground. …The Cowichan Valley Regional District has downgraded evacuation orders at the Fortis B.C. LNG facility and the Bush Creek Fish Hatchery to evacuation alerts, and addresses on Takala, David and Ivey roads will remain on evacuation alert, according to a CVRD news release.

Fires continue to burn out of control near Golden

Wildfires continue to burn across the province, with two out of control blazes in the Golden area. The Mt. Hunter fire has not seen any notable growth in the last week… the B.C. wildfire dashboard listing it at 445 hectares in estimated size. Sections of the fire continue to smoulder after the ignition, with the BC Wildfire Service saying a section of trees that were damaged in a fire from a few years ago are helping contain the perimeter. Despite the success, the fire is still classified as ‘out of control,’ although this does not necessarily describe the behaviour of the fire as out of control. The Carrol Creek fire has seen some small growth, from 442 hectares last week to 457 hectares this week. It remains a modified response fire, and has not yet reached trigger points that would require a further response.

Nearly 300 wildfires are burning across British Columbia but showers and cooler temperatures have taken an edge off the most aggressive blazes and curbed a cascade of evacuation orders and alerts. …The roughly 650-square kilometre White Rock Lake fire swept through the communities of Killiney and Ewings Landing yesterday. The district estimates about 70 properties have been burned, in addition to those in Monte Lake and Westwold levelled by the same fire earlier this month. …Travel into the Interior has been complicated by the closure of Highway 5, the Coquihalla Highway, as fire cut the route Sunday, while a mudslide has severed Highway 1 about 30 kilometres north of Lytton. That leaves Highway 3 as the only main road to or from the Lower Mainland. But that route is also shrouded by thick smoke from a fire burning between Hope and Princeton. …8,262 properties around B.C. are on evacuation order, a leap of nearly 2,000 since Friday

The Tremont Creek fire … grew by over 45 per cent in one day to over 63,000 hectares earlier this week, and came frighteningly close to the Logan Lake area before moving beyond it. “We built an above-ground water system,” Logan Lake fire chief Doug Wilson. public works and structural engineers boosted water pressure in pumps, added sprinklers and placed giant bladders with capacity for up to 2,500 gallons of water in strategic street locations, but also in cul-de-sacs so that upwards of 10 homes could be sprayed at once. He said, “it was years of working on putting sprinklers on residential rooftops and fighting hard to clear deadfall, beetle wood, and ridding the fuel load” to starve a fire’s blaze. …Kelsey Winter, program lead for FireSmart B.C., advises all B.C. residents to know the fire danger rating where they live by checking Firesmartbc.ca and taking action from there.

Wildfires were burning 603,132 acres across Oregon and Washington as of Friday morning, officials said.  Nine of the active blazes are in Oregon, while 17 are in Washington. A majority of the fires were sparked by lightning, while a few remain under investigation.  The Ford Corkscrew fire in central Washington has prompted mandatory evacuations northwest of Spokane and damaged 20 buildings. The fire has burnt 15,000 acres since Aug. 15. It was 14% contained as of Friday.   The wildfires still burning in Oregon are nowhere as large as the Bootleg fire, which reached 100% containment Sunday after burning for more than a month. It was the third-largest fire in Oregon since 1900, scorching over 400,000 acres and destroying more than 160 homes.  Fires that remain active are located mostly in forest land and rural parts of the state. Russia’s 2021 wildfires are already its largest in the history of satellite observations, burning across 17.08 million hectares of land, the Greenpeace Russia environmental group has said. The new record beats the previous record set in 2012, when fires burned 17 million hectares of land across Russia, and comes with weeks left to go in a devastating wildfire season. Grigory Kuksin, the head of Greenpeace Russia’s wildfire unit, linked this year’s unprecedented blazes to the intensifying effects of climate change that are making Russia’s huge expanses of forest drier, hotter and increasingly prone to wildfires. …Environmentalists also place the blame for the fires’ rapid spread on Russia’s firefighting policy, which allows regions to ignore blazes if the cost of fighting fires outweighs the expected damages, as well as a widespread lack of funding for extinguishing efforts.

Hundreds of Portuguese firefighters on Tuesday struggled to control a blistering blaze that broke out in southern Portugal the day before, forcing the evacuation of around 80 people. Portugal is the latest European nation to face extreme weather and fierce fires, which climate scientists warn will become increasingly common due to man-made global warming. Firefighters initially managed to control the wildfire that broke out in the early hours of Monday near the Spanish border in the tourist region of Algarve, but the blaze picked up again in the afternoon, spreading across around 3,000 hectares. …Fanned by winds, it progressed “like lightning towards the municipalities of Tavira and Vila Real de Santo Antonio,” ripping through an estimated area of 9,000 hectares, regional civil protection force commander Richard Marques told a press conference. …As the flames spread through pine forests towards the coast, authorities on Monday closed the motorway that crosses Algarve.

LA GARDE-FREINET, France — Thousands of people fled homes, campgrounds and hotels near the French Riviera on Tuesday as firefighters battled a blaze that raced through nearby forests, sending smoke pouring down wooded slopes toward vineyards in the picturesque area. It was just the latest blaze in a summer of wildfires that have swept across the Mediterranean region, leaving areas in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Algeria and Spain in smoldering ruins. The wildfire started Monday evening, in the height of France’s summer vacation season, about 40 kilometers (24 miles) inland from the coastal resort of Saint-Tropez. Fueled by powerful seasonal winds coming off the Mediterranean Sea, the fire had spread across 5,000 hectares (12,000 acres) of forest by Tuesday morning, according to the Var regional administration. Some 6,000 people were evacuated from homes and a dozen campgrounds in the region prized by vacationers.

As firefighters battled a massive blaze near Jerusalem for a third day Tuesday, the head of Israel’s fire and rescue body said international help was no longer needed, in an apparent sign of confidence that the flames are being brought under control. However, Israel accepted an offer of help from the Palestinian Authority, as firefighters were racing to extinguish dozens of remaining hotspots. The enormous wildfire has consumed some 25,000 dunams (6,200 acres) of forest outside Jerusalem since Sunday. …Firefighters believed they had managed to contain the blaze on Sunday night, but strong morning winds and low humidity on Monday sent the flames roaring back and speeding toward villages and towns throughout the hills on Jerusalem’s southwest outskirts, triggering the evacuation of some 2,000 local residents and prompting the government to seek international aid.
