With more hot and dry weather on the way this week the 27 “extreme danger” fires burning in the Southeast Fire Centre region could be on the rise, doubling as they did last week during similar conditions. In all, there are 46 wildfires of note burning in the region, including 16 that are considered high danger, leaving only two fires at moderate danger. One fire burning near Rock Creek is very low danger. Six days ago only 16 fires were considered extreme danger but high temperatures and no precipitation for the third week in a row have created a tinder dry forest undergrowth. …The Southern Interior only received 30 per cent of normal June rainfall … below-average spring precipitation with above seasonal temperatures accelerated the drying of forest fuels “at a rate not previously observed, making them highly susceptible to ignition.”

The Bootleg Fire in southern Oregon nearly doubled in size from Saturday to Sunday, to more than 150,000 acres, as extreme heat waves and wildfires continued to scorch the West. The intense flames in Fremont-Winema National Forest, which broke out Tuesday, burned for the sixth day Sunday. The out-of-control wildfire was so intense that firefighters retreated to safety zones and deployed more personnel overnight. Residents in some areas of Klamath County evacuated as the wildfire, which was zero percent contained Sunday, continued to spread. Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire; authorities said “dry weather and extremely dry fuels contribute to extreme fire behavior.” The fire interrupted electrical lines that transmit power from Oregon to California, energy officials said. California lost thousands of megawatts of imported power and struggled to maintain operating reserves as temperatures soared into triple digits in parts of the state.

LOS ANGELES — Wildfires that torched homes and forced thousands to evacuate burned across 10 parched Western states on Tuesday, and the largest, in Oregon, threatened California’s power supply. Nearly 60 wildfires tore through bone-dry timber and brush from Alaska to Wyoming. Arizona, Idaho and Montana accounted for more than half of the large active fires. The fires erupted as the West was in the grip of the second bout of dangerously high temperatures in just a few weeks. A climate change-fueled megadrought also is contributing to conditions that make fires even more dangerous, scientists say. The National Weather Service says the heat wave appeared to have peaked in many areas, and excessive-heat warnings were largely expected to expire by Tuesday. However, they continued into Tuesday night and many areas were still expected to see high in the 80s and 90s.

Firefighters working in searing heat struggled to contain the largest wildfire in California this year while state power operators urged people to conserve energy after a huge wildfire in neighboring Oregon disrupted the flow of electricity from three major transmission lines. A large swath of the West baked during the weekend in triple-digit temperatures that were expected to continue into the start of the work week. The California Independent System Operator that manages the state’s power grid issued a five-hour ”flex alert” Monday and asked consumers to “conserve as much electricity as possible” to avoid any outages. California and other parts of the West are sinking deeper into drought and that has sent fire danger sky high in many areas. In Arizona, a small plane crashed Saturday during a survey of a wildfire in rural Mohave County, killing both crew members. …In Idaho, Gov. Brad Little declared a wildfire emergency Friday…
