As Canada battled wildfires from its west coast to the prairies, another blistering heat wave threatened to descend this week on British Columbia, where more than a million acres have burned since April. In recent months, a series of near-relentless heat waves and a deepening drought linked to climate change have helped to fuel exploding wildfires. In Manitoba, a drought has forced livestock farmers to consider selling some or all of their cattle. …northwestern Ontario is also bracing for a possible outbreak of fires later this week… The risks from these fires was illustrated in southern Oregon, where the Bootleg Fire grew so large and hot that it created its own weather, triggering lightning and releasing enormous amounts of smoke. …The wildfires scorching areas of Canada and the United States in recent years may be only the beginning of the areas’ woes, according to a new United Nations scientific report

At least six structures on four properties within Bouleau Lake area have sustained significant damage from the White Rock Lake wildfire, according to Central Okanagan Emergency Operations. An aerial survey by the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) confirmed the damage, and the emergency operations centre has attempted to contact affected property owners. The area is currently under an evacuation order and a formal confirmation will require a ground survey when fire conditions allow safe access. “North Westside firefighters and multiple other fire departments are working alongside each other and BC Wildfire, aiding in back burns along Westside Road,” said North Westside fire chief Alex Van Bruksvoort. “We are continuing to do work to help further protect homes in Lower Killiney Beach area. …The Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team has opened a temporary emergency animal shelter in Lake Country to house companion animal evacuees and assist with any animal-related concerns.

Mountain pine beetle-infested timber an issue at White Rock Lake fire, Deputy Forest Minister says

The Deputy Forest Minister says the primary issue at the White Rock Lake fire is pine beetle-infested trees. Rick Manwaring made that comment when asked by NL News if fuel loads in the forest are driving some of the extreme fire conditions. “One of the reasons for the extreme fire behaviour, in addition to the extreme dry conditions we have, is things like mountain pine beetle. Stands that get infected by those forest insects on a large scale,” Manwaring says. “And that type of fuel… is the primary issue that we’re dealing with out there.” The fire levelled the majority of Monte Lake and Paxton Valley on Thursday, as the fire moved an estimated 18 kilometres in eight hours during gusting winds.

VICTORIA — A wildfire burning in the Copper Canyon area, roughly 13 kilometres northwest of Duncan, B.C., is now “being held,” the BC Wildfire Service said Tuesday.  The fire started on Aug. 5, and grew to roughly 32 hectares. While the fire hasn’t gone down in size, the BC Wildfire Service says that “sufficient suppression action has been taken” and that it’s unlikely that the fire will grow past the boundaries set up by firefighters.  In total, 48 firefighters, one firefighting helicopter, four water tenders and a “parattack” crew – firefighters who parachute to hard-to-reach fire zones – are working to extinguish the blaze.

VANCOUVER — Another period of hot, dry weather is forecast for August, stoking current fires and likely leading to new ones, according to the latest wildfire report from B.C. Wildfire Service. The report predicts more new fires in August and significant growth among current fires of note. Hot, dry conditions are expected to return mid-week, particularly in the interior and southeast of the province, which remains at high risk for wildfires. Widespread rainfall seen early in August would “moderate fire activity in the short-term,” according to the report. Wildfires of note, however, were expected to grow “with potential for big spread events being when winds increase over 20 kilometres per hour.” “The wildfires burning across the province will continue as such until extended periods of precipitation are received,” according to the report. There are no signs that B.C. can expect more rain anytime soon, however.

Recent rainfall has helped slow the activity of some of the larger forest fires that for weeks have plagued northwestern Ontario, where 115 were burning Wednesday afternoon. Jonathan Scott, a fire information officer with Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES), said Tuesday’s storm brought significant rainfall to some areas. “There were scattered amounts,” he said. “Certain areas got upwards of 50 millimetres, but other areas got less, like two millimetres. “As it stands now, recent rainfall has reduced fire behaviour on some larger fires.” The downside of such storms, Scott said, is the lightning strikes that accompany them, as they can cause further forest fire starts.

California’s largest single wildfire in recorded history kept pushing through forestlands as fire crews tried to protect rural communities from flames that have destroyed hundreds of homes.   Thick smoke cleared for several hours along one edge of the Dixie Fire on Monday, allowing aircraft to join nearly 6,000 firefighters in the attack. Many were battling to protect more than a dozen small mountain and rural communities in the northern Sierra Nevada.  “Today was the first day in a few days that we had good, clean air in there so we were able to use our helicopters,” allowing some progress, Kyle Jacobson, the east zone incident commander, said at an evening briefing.  Crews managed to cut thousands of acres of new fire lines and the fire’s southern edges were in good shape but the fire’s future was an unknown, authorities said.

With extreme fires burning, Forest Service changes strategy

Facing record-breaking dry conditions across the West, the U.S. Forest Service announced it will aggressively put out all wildfires this summer. As a result, the agency’s use of “good fire,” the lower-intensity blazes that clear out overgrown forests, will also stop. With thousands of firefighting personnel battling extreme blazes, federal officials say no one can be spared for fire prevention work. But some fire experts worry that the blanket rule takes away the most important tools foresters have to reduce future wildfire risk, even in parts of the country where it may be safe to use them. More than 40 scientists sent a letter requesting the Forest Service reconsider the policy change. “It’s a tough decision, I think, because politically, there’s a lot of pressure to put every single fire out,” says Crystal Kolden, fire scientist at the University of California, Merced. “The problem is that political pressure is not based on good science.”

…Southern California is the most technologically advanced area in the world for fighting wildfires. Brian Fennessy, the county fire chief could call on dozens of fire engines and more than 2,200 firefighters from Orange, Los Angeles, and Ventura counties. He had on hand a firefighting air force of about a dozen helicopters and planes. But the Santa Ana winds fanning the flames made it impossible for the fleet to fly. Without the help of planes and helicopters, firefighters predicted that the Silverado Fire would roll over more than 2,000 homes within 24 hours. Weeks earlier, Fennessy had signed a contract with Coulson Aviation Inc., an aerial firefighting company based in British Columbia. Coulson had recently outfitted a huge Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter with equipment that could drop 3,000 gallons of water or fire-retardant chemicals—about 10 times what the more commonly used Bell 412 helicopter can unload—in a little more than two seconds.

Everyone can agree the Dixie Fire is large. But California’s main fire agency says it’s not the largest single wildfire in state history, as some have called it.  That’s because the Dixie Fire is not a single wildfire. It’s made up of two fires — the other being the Fly Fire, which was about 4,300 acres before it connected to and became part of the already burning Dixie Fire, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.   Some likely thought the Dixie Fire was a single fire because on the state’s historical list of largest wildfires, fire incidents that involved multiple fires being managed as one are referred to as complexes.  …Cal Fire Capt. Robert Foxworthy said the agency has been getting numerous requests for clarification over the past few days whether the Dixie Fire is a single blaze. Siberia’s wildfires are bigger than all the world’s other blazes combined

MOSCOW — For Russia, there are two types of fires raging across Siberia: the kind the authorities are fighting and the others they are allowing to burn. That’s because Siberia is so vast that huge fires can burn without threatening any major settlements, transportation systems or infrastructure — but are still part of a swath of infernos that together are larger than all the other blazes around the world. On one level, the Siberian fires are part of an annual cycle. But many climate experts see the staggering scope of this year’s fires as another sign of greater fire risks on a warming planet that is potentially being made even hotter by huge carbon emissions from the blazes.  …As Russia faces one of its worst fire seasons, environmentalists say there is little urgency about an event that officials play down every year.

The season of Brazilian forest fires has begun, and early data plus severe drought is sparking concern that nationwide destruction in 2021 will stay at the high levels recorded in the past two years, despite efforts to tamp down the blazes. The government space agency …reported more area burned in the month of July than in any July since 2016. The same was true for June. Most Brazilian blazes are manmade, often started illegally by land-grabbers clearing forest for cattle or crops. Fires tend to begin increasing in June and peak in September, according to historical data. They can easily get out of control during the dry season, burning large swaths of forest to the ground. …Carlos Nobre, a prominent climatologist, says Brazil’s Amazon is nearing a “tipping point,” after which the thick jungle will cease to generate enough moisture to sustain its current form and will begin transforming into tropical savanna.

MOSCOW – Summer wildfires have already produced a record amount of carbon emissions in Russia’s Siberian region of Yakutia, with still more weeks of the fire season to come, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite monitoring unit. Environmentalists fear the fires, fuelled by hot weather, may thaw Siberian permafrost and peatlands, releasing even more carbon that was long stored in the frozen tundra. So far, this year’s fires have torn through more than 4.2 million hectares in Yakutia, sending enormous plumes of smoke as far as the North Pole this week thousands of kilometers away. …While wildfire is part of the natural forest cycle for Russia’s northern boreal forests, scientists have been stunned by the scale and intensity of blazes in recent years.

VARIBOBI, Greece — Firefighters in Greece raced Wednesday to fully contain a wildfire on the outskirts of Athens that destroyed or seriously damaged dozens of homes overnight, forced thousands to flee, and threatened a former royal palace, as high temperatures fueled wildfires across the country. Greece is enduring its worst heat wave in decades, with temperatures in parts of the country expected to reach 113 Fahrenheit. The Fire Service took advantage of cooler morning hours to send low-flying helicopters and planes to dump water on charred forest land around Tatoi, 12 1/2 miles north of the capital, where more than 500 firefighters had battled through the night to contain the blaze… The fire outside Athens sent clouds of smoke over the Greek capital, obscuring visibility and prompting health authorities to issue warnings to people with breathing difficulties to remain indoors.
