As Canada battled wildfires from its west coast to the prairies, another blistering heat wave threatened to descend this week on British Columbia, where more than a million acres have burned since April. In recent months, a series of near-relentless heat waves and a deepening drought linked to climate change have helped to fuel exploding wildfires. In Manitoba, a drought has forced livestock farmers to consider selling some or all of their cattle. …northwestern Ontario is also bracing for a possible outbreak of fires later this week… The risks from these fires was illustrated in southern Oregon, where the Bootleg Fire grew so large and hot that it created its own weather, triggering lightning and releasing enormous amounts of smoke. …The wildfires scorching areas of Canada and the United States in recent years may be only the beginning of the areas’ woes, according to a new United Nations scientific report

Windy conditions in British Columbia’s Interior have prompted authorities to order hundreds of properties evacuated and close several highways throughout the Okanagan and surrounding areas Sunday evening as wildfires grew in size. The City of Armstrong, about 75 kilometres north of Kelowna, issued an evacuation alert for the entire community of roughly 5,000 as the White Rock Lake fire burned about 20 kilometres outside of town. Some of the largest and most dangerous fires are burning in the southern Interior in the Kamloops fire centre where most of the new evacuation orders have been issued. The Okanagan Indian Band near Vernon issued an evacuation order for more than 80 properties Sunday afternoon. Around the same time, the nearby Spallumcheen Township upgraded an evacuation alert for dozens of properties to an evacuation order.

The Deputy Forest Minister says the primary issue at the White Rock Lake fire is pine beetle-infested trees. Rick Manwaring made that comment when asked by NL News if fuel loads in the forest are driving some of the extreme fire conditions. “One of the reasons for the extreme fire behaviour, in addition to the extreme dry conditions we have, is things like mountain pine beetle. Stands that get infected by those forest insects on a large scale,” Manwaring says. “And that type of fuel… is the primary issue that we’re dealing with out there.” The fire levelled the majority of Monte Lake and Paxton Valley on Thursday, as the fire moved an estimated 18 kilometres in eight hours during gusting winds.

Recent rainfall has helped slow the activity of some of the larger forest fires that for weeks have plagued northwestern Ontario, where 115 were burning Wednesday afternoon. Jonathan Scott, a fire information officer with Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES), said Tuesday’s storm brought significant rainfall to some areas. “There were scattered amounts,” he said. “Certain areas got upwards of 50 millimetres, but other areas got less, like two millimetres. “As it stands now, recent rainfall has reduced fire behaviour on some larger fires.” The downside of such storms, Scott said, is the lightning strikes that accompany them, as they can cause further forest fire starts.

QUINCY, California — Thousands of Northern California homes were threatened Sunday by the nation’s largest wildfire and officials warned the danger of new blazes erupting across the West was high because of unstable weather. Thunderstorms that moved in starting Friday didn’t produce much rain but whipped up winds and generated lightning strikes across the northern Sierra where crews were battling the month-old Dixie Fire. Extreme heat returned Sunday with temperatures expected to top 100 degrees (38 Celsius). “We’re definitely still dealing with the possibility of lightning. Winds are all over the place. Facing record-breaking dry conditions across the West, the U.S. Forest Service announced it will aggressively put out all wildfires this summer. As a result, the agency’s use of “good fire,” the lower-intensity blazes that clear out overgrown forests, will also stop. With thousands of firefighting personnel battling extreme blazes, federal officials say no one can be spared for fire prevention work. More than 40 scientists sent a letter requesting the Forest Service reconsider the policy change. “It’s a tough decision, I think, because politically, there’s a lot of pressure to put every single fire out,” says Crystal Kolden, fire scientist at the University of California, Merced. “The problem is that political pressure is not based on good science.”

Everyone can agree the Dixie Fire is large. But California’s main fire agency says it’s not the largest single wildfire in state history, as some have called it.  That’s because the Dixie Fire is not a single wildfire. It’s made up of two fires — the other being the Fly Fire, which was about 4,300 acres before it connected to and became part of the already burning Dixie Fire, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.   Some likely thought the Dixie Fire was a single fire because on the state’s historical list of largest wildfires, fire incidents that involved multiple fires being managed as one are referred to as complexes.  …Cal Fire Capt. Robert Foxworthy said the agency has been getting numerous requests for clarification over the past few days whether the Dixie Fire is a single blaze. MOSCOW — For Russia, there are two types of fires raging across Siberia: the kind the authorities are fighting and the others they are allowing to burn. That’s because Siberia is so vast that huge fires can burn without threatening any major settlements, transportation systems or infrastructure — but are still part of a swath of infernos that together are larger than all the other blazes around the world. On one level, the Siberian fires are part of an annual cycle. But many climate experts see the staggering scope of this year’s fires as another sign of greater fire risks on a warming planet that is potentially being made even hotter by huge carbon emissions from the blazes.  …As Russia faces one of its worst fire seasons, environmentalists say there is little urgency about an event that officials play down every year.

ALGIERS, Algeria — At least 25 soldiers died saving residents from wildfires ravaging mountain forests and villages east of Algeria’s capital, the president announced as the civilian toll rose to at least 17. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune tweeted that the soldiers were “martyrs” who saved 100 people from the fires in two areas of Kabyle, the region that is home to the North African nation’s Berber population. Eleven other soldiers were burned fighting the fires, four of them seriously, the Defense Ministry said. Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane later said that 17 civilians had lost their lives, raising the count of citizens from seven previously and bringing the total death toll to 42. The mountainous Kabyle region, 100 kilometers east of Algeria’s capital of Algiers, is dotted with difficult-to-access villages and with temperatures rising has had limited water. Some villagers were fleeing, while others tried to hold back the flames themselves, using buckets, branches and rudimentary tools.

RUSSIA — Smoke from raging forest fires in Siberia has reached the north pole for the first time in recorded history, as a Russian monitoring institute warned the blazes were worsening. Devastating wildfires have ripped across Siberia with increasing regularity over the past few years, which Russia’s weather officials and environmentalists have linked to climate change and an underfunded forest service. …One of Siberia’s hardest-hit regions this year has been Yakutia – Russia’s largest and coldest region that sits atop permafrost – which has had record high temperatures and drought. …On Saturday, the US space agency Nasa said its satellite images showed wildfire smoke travelling “more than 3,000km (1,800 miles) from Yakutia to reach the north pole”, calling it “a first in recorded history”. It added that on 6 August most of Russia was covered in smoke.

ARKITSA Greece — Firefighters and residents battled into the night Monday for a seventh day against a massive fire on Greece’s second-largest island as the nation endured what the prime minister described as “a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions.” Smoke and ash from Evia, a rugged island of forests and coves close to the Greek mainland, blocked out the sun and turned the sky orange. The fire, which began Aug. 3, is the most severe of hundreds in the past week across Greece, gobbling up pristine pine forests as well as homes and businesses and forcing hundreds to quickly evacuate by sea to save their lives. Greece has been baked by its worst heat wave in three decades, which sent temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius and turned its prized pine forests into bone-dry tinderboxes.
