The US is bad at recycling. Making businesses pay could boost the rate.

Americans have reason to envy some Canadian provinces and European countries for their waste systems as well. Recycling rates are high there, and taxpayers don’t cover the bill, unlike in the US. British Columbia, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands all had recycling rates of 78% or higher in recent years when averaged across materials like paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, and plastic, according to an analysis published Thursday by The Recycling Partnership, a group dedicated to improving recycling across the US. …Washington and Connecticut delivered the highest score, at about 50%, while Maryland, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Florida all came in at 34% or below, the analysis found. So what explains the gap? The Canadian provinces and European countries have laws that… require the companies that produce waste from bottles, packaging, and other materials to pay fees on those items. This, in turn, raises money for recycling and disposal.

Turning on a computer, calling someone to catch-up, adjusting the air or water temperature in our homes, these are all familiar tasks and yet, less is known about the one product that makes them possible, utility poles. Approximately 150 million preserved wood utility poles deliver electricity and telecommunication services throughout North America. For over a century we have depended on wood utility poles for our day-to-day activities. While ubiquitous to our surroundings, few people who work outside of the utility or pressure treated wood industries understand the true impacts of utility poles on our lives and daily activities. Thousands of Canadians work in the treated wood and utility industries. From the tree planters foresters, harvesters, treating facility employees, to the line workers who install and maintain the utility poles, the economic span of the wood utility industry is far reaching for Canadians from coast to coast.

Unless building codes catch up to extreme heat, Canada’s future summers will be even deadlier

…An investigation by a B.C. coroner’s panel found there were 619 heat-related deaths during the June 2021 week-long heat dome event. Nearly 98 per cent of the victims died indoors, mostly in homes without adequate cooling systems. That same observation could apply as well to construction rules in other parts of the country. A months-long Globe and Mail examination of building codes and bylaws across Canada shows that they lack provisions to help new buildings cope with the increasing rate and severity of hailstorms, floods, wildfires, tornadoes – and extreme heat. …But given that a changing climate will cause increasingly hotter weather, the panel also brought up a new recommendation: that the 2024 edition of the B.C. building code require new homes to have features that lessen the impact of extreme heat. This could be accomplished either through passive cooling, such as using sun-reflecting materials, or active cooling systems. [Access to this full story may require a subscription to the Globe and Mail]

As tornadoes in Canada get more destructive, momentum builds for new building codes to save homes

Located in the rural outskirts of London, Ont., The Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment dome, or WindEEE for short, is a research facility of Western University. The work being done here advances our understanding of complex wind systems and is important because Canada ranks second globally, behind the U.S., for the most tornadoes recorded per year. Destructive twisters usually strike southern Ontario, southern Quebec, and the southern Prairies – and it’s a problem that’s getting worse. …WindEEE is used to assess how buildings and other infrastructure will perform under extreme wind conditions, supporting the work of scientists with the university’s Northern Tornadoes Project. …Across Canada, a patchwork of codes are in effect, with some jurisdictions working off of decades-old national code editions. …No provincial or territorial building code currently requires hurricane straps. South of the border, the hurricane-prone state of Florida has, since 2002, mandated that new homes have those metal clips. [This Globe and Mail story requires a subscription to read the full text]

…As extreme weather events are increasing, the way the places in which we live, work and play are designed and built becomes more important than ever. And building codes, which set minimum standards for structural protection, are a tool that, if they took climate change into account, could save lives and property.  …The Globe’s months-long examination reveals that Canada’s building code regulations are inadequate to stand up to our new climate reality and are largely based on outdated or poor-quality data that does not consider current or future climate change.  …In Lytton, a forestry consulting company that the town retained to create a wildfire protection plan, B.A. Blackwell & Associates Ltd., warned in its report that the community remains vulnerable. “It is not ‘if’ another wildfire will threaten Lytton, but it is ‘when’,” it said. How to set up your next mass timber construction project for success

Mass timber construction, which uses various forms of wood products including glue-laminated columns and beams and cross laminated (CLT) panels instead of more traditional steel and concrete materials, has been used for many years in Europe. In the United States, this construction approach is fast gaining traction. …Mass timber has two key differentiators from traditional materials that drive fundamentally different design and procurement processes. First, it is intended to be exposed, so the structure itself should be beautiful, elegant, and consistent. Second, the procurement of a mass timber building is quite different than a concrete or steel building, as there are many individual suppliers and subcontractors involved. …Another key factor is the limited number of mass timber manufacturers and their capacity. …To achieve the best results with mass timber projects, it is important to not only design and plan well, but to do so early.

Mass timber is emerging all across North America. Beyond the benefits of natural materials and visible structures, the capabilities of industrialized offsite construction are beginning to change the model of delivery for an increasing range of buildings. When a California owner-developer proposed the first mass timber building in the state, they chose the experience, scope, and qualifications carefully, and the entire mass timber package was delivered on a train from Quebec, Canada. California joined international code trends acknowledging the performance and safety of mass timber construction types in September of 2022.  …The tragic wildfires in northern California had already introduced a demand for rapid rebuilds, with more fire-resistant construction.  The first Quebec prefab systems to reach the west were less publicized than mass timber, as high-end residential clients looked to the most experienced and custom offsite partners to rebuild towns like Malibu in 2019.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Inside a warehouse at the industrial Port of Portland lies what some believe could be the answer to Oregon’s housing crisis — a prototype of an affordable housing unit made from mass timber.  Once mass-produced at the factory being planned at the port, the units ranging from 426 square feet (40 square meters) to 1,136 square feet (106 square meters) could be deployed across the state to be assembled in urban and rural communities alike, potentially alleviating a critical housing shortage that has driven Oregon’s high rates of homelessness.  “I can’t wait to see these homes rolling down the road to those communities who need them right now,” said newly inaugurated Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek, who visited the prototypes Friday. …On her first full day in office earlier this month, Kotek signed an executive order setting a new housing construction target of 36,000 units per year — an 80% increase over current production — in a bid to address the state’s housing shortage.

North Carolina firm Plantd Materials has developed a material consisting of processed perennial grasses that it says will be lighter and stronger than traditional timber boards while capturing more carbon. Called Plantd, the material is a “blend of fast-growing perennial grasses” that the company aims to produce as a replacement for a traditional oriented strand board (OSB), a plywood-like material used for sheathing walls and floors. Plantd Materials created a set of machinery that uses heat and pressure to press shredded grass into panels. It allows the creation of standard four-by-eight-foot (1.2 by 2.4 metre) panels that use about 50 pounds (22.6 kilograms) of grass. …Dorfman, who founded the company with former SpaceX engineers Huade Tan and Nathan Silvernail, believes that the material has the potential to “solve some real problems for builders” in the residential market. …Plantd Materials uses perennial grass which grows faster than timber. …Plantd Materials has received preliminary approval for use as roof panels.

Fear of fire in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy is holding back a switch to more sustainable building materials, a leading architect has told Sky News. Andrew Waugh of Waugh Thistleton Architects, which is at the forefront of eco-building design, said the construction industry and regulators are too cautious about using engineered timber in tall structures – even though the catastrophe was in a concrete tower. “We are being held back,” he said. “(The UK) were the innovators of this material before Grenfell happened. “Now we have a situation where the rest of the world are changing their building regulations, changing their planning laws and government procurement for housing, hospitals and schools to promote the use of timber. “And we are alone in the UK in not doing anything to promote the use of timber.” Mr Waugh designed the new six-storey Black and White Building, the UK’s tallest office block constructed from engineered timber.

It’s renewable, strong as steel, astonishingly fireproof – yet it’s easy and quiet to build with. Could timber construction be the future? We step inside the revolutionary new London workplace that everyone wants to touch. …In Shoreditch, east London, stands the Black & White, a new office block that boasts few of the shiny gimmicks of its bloated glass and steel neighbours… But building it used almost 40% less carbon than comparable structures – primarily because it’s made of wood. …“We’re getting a really clear understanding of the biophilic benefits of natural environments, beyond the carbon savings,” says Andrew Waugh of Waugh Thistleton, the architects behind the project. “People sleep better in timber homes, study better in timber schools, heal faster in timber hospitals and have less stress in timber offices.” …in the development industry, form follows finance. Only this time, it’s keen to be seen to be green.

Construction and the built environment are responsible for approximately 40% of global energy-related CO2 emissions. A significant percentage of this comes from the extraction, processing and energy-intensive manufacturing of building products.  To meet targets for net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, the construction industry must halve carbon emissions each decade, while still meeting the needs of a growing urban population, responding to the increasing demand for new buildings and tackling the urgent requirement to retrofit 29m existing homes in the UK alone to reduce energy consumption. …As it stands, wood is the only sustainable structural material that grows worldwide which can enable substantial decarbonisation of the built environment based on existing business models and proven technology. …Lifecycle assessment studies consistently show that timber products absorb and store more carbon than is emitted through their production – which means timber can actively reduce carbon emissions rather than adding to them on projects.
