Scientists have found a way to harden wood to make a knife that rivals steel

Scientists have developed a process that allows them to manipulate wood to make it denser and harder than the natural product. They used the resulting material to make items like wooden knives and nails that rival traditional steel. Teng Li, a materials scientist and mechanical engineer from the University of Maryland, told Quirks & Quarks host Bob McDonald that he and his colleagues made the wooden knife to demonstrate the new process they developed. “Surprisingly, our wooden knife is actually three times sharper than the typical stainless steel dinner table knife,” he said. …”We also demonstrated that you can use these hardwoods to make nails as functional as steel nails,” said Li. “We know steel nails rust over time. But the wooden nail won’t suffer from this problem. …”Trees are renewable and wood is sustainable,” he said. “If we look back to mother nature, we can use this natural material toward a sustainable future.”

Steel supply chain issues create opportunities for mass timber: expert

Current supply chain difficulties that extend lead times on commodities such as steel I-joists and pre-engineered building are creating new opportunities for mass timber products in the construction of lowrise commercial buildings across Canada. So says Patrick Crabbe with Bird Construction, pointing out mass timber beams and columns can make a leap into the one-storey, 10,000 to 15,000 square foot office-retail building world because they can be manufactured in only eight weeks and installed in another two. …Prior to the pandemic, Bird could deliver a multi-tenant, 10,000-square-foot bricks and mortar project in six to eight months. “Now, it takes like 16 months. Over the past eight months it has been steel components that are creating the scheduled delays.” He says while steel prices are rising, lumber costs have dropped “substantially”. While mass timber might cost a bit more than steel, delays in delivery has brought up the end costs of buildings constructed in steel.

Some on the Comox Strathcona Waste Management board are questioning why timber from the old gymnasium at the new Lake Trail school in Courtenay was not salvaged. Will Cole-Hamilton, a Courtenay council representative, brought up the matter at the Oct. 21 board meeting, expressing some disappointment the school district did not deconstruct the (1950s) gym floor so that the old timber could be reused. “This kind of flooring is highly sought-after,” he said. …the school district is funded by the Ministry of Education for capital projects, so they have to operate within financial boundaries that would make the additional cost and time for some reclamation of materials difficult. “Deconstruction is a slow, laborious process, and it’s expensive,” Ian Heselgrave, the School District 71 director of operations said. …Heselgrave also pointed out the district did find ways to repurpose materials from the old Lake Trail building.

Thank you to all the buyers and suppliers who participated in the online one-to-one meetings! We had a little over 300 meetings over the two days. We have seen a lot of innovative and creative marketing activities to connect with buyers over the last 20 months; however, one has stood out as particularly impressive. Dai Ona and his company, Daizen Joinery, offered a factory tour of their facilities as part of the WoodTALKS event at the GBM. As I understand it, Dai had over 110 architects and builders from across North America participate in his factory tour. They pulled out all stops using multi-cameras, staff interviews, humming machinery and a question-and-answer segment to make the 45-minute presentation visually appealing and extremely interesting to the audience. Making it more impressive is this was done live. It was very well executed and kudos to the team at Daizen.

Canada is careful with trees

Canada’s forest products sector and its workers strongly believe that we have a shared responsibility to protect our environment and fight climate change. Our sector is proud to be an early supporter of Canada’s commitment to Paris Agreement targets and our move to a net-zero carbon economy by 2050. Despite this, an item recently appearing in your publication, “It’s time to talk about toilet paper,” misrepresents how Canada’s forests are managed and how toilet paper is made. In Canada, trees are sustainably harvested to make low carbon building materials like lumber. Leftover wood chips, bark, and sawdust go into other products like toilet paper, sanitary products, biofuels, and other low carbon biomaterials. This represents our ‘Made in Canada’ commitment to reducing waste by getting value from every part of the tree.

Wood, or more specifically mass timber construction, is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of proptech. Yet, as much as any algorithm, mass timber engineering is being used increasingly as a technological solution in the construction industry, particularly in low- to mid-rise buildings. “I would definitely put mass timber under the umbrella of construction technology, and I think all construction technology fits under proptech,” said Henry D’Esposito, construction research lead for JLL. …Although only included in a tiny percentage of construction in the U.S. right now, mass timber is growing as an alternative to steel and concrete construction in projects up to 18 floors, D’Esposito said. “From a national perspective it’s growing faster than overall construction. …Two reasons for that growth are mass timber’s sustainability and aesthetics.

When the developer Lendlease opens its $600 million residential and office complex in Los Angeles, expected in 2025, the site will have the typical hallmarks of sustainable development: proximity to a light-rail stop, an all-electric residential tower, solar panels and a pedestrian plaza. But those features are considered commonplace these days. What makes this development more striking is how sustainability is not simply an amenity or signifier of corporate responsibility but a core feature of its financing plan. “We were doing sustainable development before there was investor pressure, but now there is investor pressure,” said Sara Neff, at Lendlease. The company’s investor … will be tracking environmental performance and metrics, including eliminating tenant emissions by procuring 100% renewable energy. The project is part of a larger movement of investors steering money toward sustainable real estate, thanks to new technology and tougher standards that allow for better tracking of a development’s ability to reduce its carbon footprint.

Portland International Airport will soon have one more unique feature for travelers to marvel at: a 392,000 square-foot wooden roof. Airport officials showed off the fabrication yard where the roof is being built. Designers say the massive structure will evoke the Pacific Northwest’s forests and rivers, and will allow natural light to filter through the wooden beams to give travelers the feeling of walking through a park. …The wood used to construct the dramatic arched beams of the roof is sourced from Oregon and Washington, and has benefits beyond its visual appeal. “There is no steel within those particular wood beams,” said Granato. “They’re designed to absorb any energy that could come from a Cascadia subduction earthquake.” …Because of the roof’s massive size, it can’t be constructed on-site without causing major delays to airport operations. …Once complete, each of the 20 roof modules will be transported and put in place by mid-2022.

As is now widely appreciated, wood’s carbon sequestration capabilities—and its resulting favorable carbon footprint compared with concrete and steel—have helped lead to its increased use in building construction. However, the resurgence of interest in engineered lumber has raised renewed concerns about overharvesting and deforestation. Once the U.S. Farm Bill was amended in 2018 to legalize agricultural hemp, entrepreneurs and product manufacturers began to take note. Like wood, hemp stores carbon. …Ironically, the advantages of modern lumber provide leverage to its newfound competitor. Wood’s newfound popularity is due to its beneficial carbon footprint, renewable growth, and advances in processing—but hemp scores even better in these areas. Additionally, the ability for farmers to participate in an emerging, distributed economy is a plus. That said, hemp building products may remain confined to shorter spans and interior applications in the near term.

Durham startup Plantd has a bold vision – to meet the materials demand of the growing homebuilder market, without chopping down a single tree. …Plantd wants to help solve the world’s climate change challenges by capturing carbon. Entrepreneur Josh Dorfman knows it’s a lofty plan, to make a dent in climate change using, of all things, hemp. But he insists it’s a solid business strategy. And builders are already buying in, he said – even though a building constructed from his materials has yet to get off the ground. …Its fast growing time – shooting up to 20 feet tall in one summer – allows it to capture carbon faster than trees, Dorfman said. It can be harvested using standard equipment. And, as a building material, it was actually stronger than wood. …The vision for the first product is OSB – oriented strand board… Dorfman believes Plantd’s OSB three to four times stronger than wood.

Greater Helsinki, Finland — Simple changes in urban planning can reduce carbon emissions and increase carbon storage, offering readymade tools to help meet emissions targets. By combining complementary approaches, cities can build a sustainable infrastructure and encourage environmentally friendly development. Construction and building … account for about 40% of primary energy demand worldwide and generate one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions – tenfold more than air traffic. … Building with wood instead of concrete would require fewer industrially produced, carbon-intensive materials, meaning lower emissions. Wood-based buildings also serve as carbon storage, trapping carbon which might be released back into the atmosphere from shorter-lived wood-based products. Research by Seppo Junnila’s team at Aalto University showed that using wood to build 80 percent of new residential buildings in Europe would sequester 55 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, equivalent to nearly half of the annual emissions of Europe’s cement industry.

Natural wood boasts an inherently lower life cycle cost than other materials and is a strong, lightweight, and durable composite material that could offer an attractive alternative to commonly used polymers, metals and alloys, if its properties and functionality could be improved. Previous approaches, such as delignification and densification, have failed to provide the same formability offered by metals and plastics. A innovative new technique, using a rapid ‘water-shock’ process, able to create strong and moldable is exciting… After extracting the lignin—a polymer which binds the cell walls inside wood that give it strength—which softens it, and then closing the fibers via evaporation, the research team, involving the University of Bristol, re-swelled the wood by “shocking” it with water. …The resulting 3D-Molded Wood is six-times stronger than the starting wood and comparable to widely used lightweight materials like aluminum alloys. …opening up new applications wood.

Architecture studios Jakob+MacFarlane and T.ark have designed a low-carbon cross-laminated timber building called Living Landscape that will transform a landfill site in Iceland’s capital city. Slated for completion in 2026, the 26,000-square-metre mixed-use building is set to become the “largest wooden building in Iceland” once complete. …The Reinventing Cities programme encourages projects to minimise both embodied carbon – emissions generated during material production and construction – and operational carbon, which are emissions caused by the building’s usage. Jakob+MacFarlane and T.ark are aiming for net-zero emissions, which involves eliminating all possible emissions and offsetting any that cannot be eliminated by removing carbon from the atmosphere. CLT will reduce embodied carbon “by almost 80 per cent” According to Jakob+MacFarlane, this will be achieved in part by using a prefabricated cross-laminated timber structure.

The government has vowed to promote the use of timber in low-rise construction – prioritising the material in its own procurement, and funding research into ‘innovative timber products’ In its 368-page Net Zero Strategy, published yesterday, the government acknowledged that ‘felled trees store carbon within them and timber has the lowest embodied carbon of any mainstream building materials’. It said it would ‘promote the safe use of timber in construction’ through several measures, and will work with industry bodies to create ‘a policy roadmap on the use of timber’. …The government will provide financial support for the development of ‘innovative timber products’ through the Forestry Innovation Fund, and drive ‘an increase in the use of certain modern methods of construction’ some of which will involve timber. …Finally, the government said it would ‘encourage’ research into the barriers that architects and builders face.

Metsä Wood and its partners have designed a hybrid sandwich wall element, which they say will renew offsite construction. The innovation combines concrete with Kerto LVL (laminated veneer lumber). The lighter weight of the hybrid sandwich wall elements proved to be a valuable benefit in the first construction project at Metsä Fibre’s Rauma sawmill. Skanska, the constructor of Metsä Fibre’s new Rauma sawmill, has set up ambitious  goals for itself as it aims to be carbon neutral globally by 2045. This has led the company to provide low-carbon or carbon neutral life-time solutions to its customers. …In the production of a hybrid sandwich wall element, a Kerto LVL panel forms the load-bearing core. This is followed by an insulation layer and reinforced concrete facade. …After the assembly the seams are finished and there is no need to do seaming, concrete grinding or cleaning, as is the case with concrete sandwich panels.

…the UK timber industry has called on the government to take stronger action to reduce embodied carbon emissions through policy, supported by initiatives such as Wood CO2ts Less and Time for Timber, alongside campaigns such as Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN). …The industry must continue to make the most of the recent buzz around wood. Considerations around embodied carbon combined with market pressure on the timber supply chain serve to remind us of the critical role that timber can play in the circular economy and potential of timber buildings in a net-zero future. Designing buildings that can be flexible during their lifetime is an increasingly important element of sustainable architecture and design, and timber is the ideal material for re-use. Designing for disassembly, both for furniture or joinery products, as well as whole building systems, means that timber products and buildings can have multiple lives.

VANCOUVER, BC — The global environmental organization Greenpeace celebrates its 50th anniversary in Vancouver, with an open-air exhibition at Granville Island designed in collaboration with architect Michael Green, known for his passion for sustainable design. …Many people don’t know that Greenpeace was founded in Vancouver, says Green, and it’s something he feels very proud of. …“We’re actually building a big sculpture to give the visitor a sense of what it must have felt like for those folks sitting in zodiacs below those harpoons as a way to mark the entry to the photography show,” says Green. …Similar activism happened in Vancouver in the design community that has dramatically affected how we enjoy the city today, says Green. …Green says he advocates for “responsible forestry,” looking not only at the design and construction processes they follow but also how they source their materials and preserve, protect, and restore trees.
