What are you flushing away? These brands of toilet paper are dumping on the environment, ranking says

A family of four’s annual toilet paper use generates about the same amount of carbon as cutting down 27 trees or flying on a jet from Toronto to Vancouver. Those are the kind of statistics that might make you want to sit down, on the throne, perhaps, with a new appreciation of what we’re flushing away. The numbers come from the New York-based Natural Resources Defense Council. The council’s annual ranking of toilet paper released Friday heaps scorn on those companies, such as consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble Corp., that shun recycled paper in their top-selling products, such as Charmin. The council gives mixed praise to competitor Kimberly-Clark Corp. for finally offering environmental tissue — Scott Essential Standard Roll — to the residential market, while retaining market share in offending tissues, such as Cottonelle. …“The toilet paper we buy is a climate decision,” Vinyard said.

Identifying treated wood uses for buildings required under the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) in the National Building Code was among the salient issues raised at a webinar recently hosted by Wood WORKS!, a Canadian Wood Council program. Speaker Craig Wilson, who was partly responsible for developing the “use category system” for treated wood — the basis of the CSA requirements today — said specifying treated wood for non-residential applications falls under three main categories: wood species and size; type of preservative used; and the wood’s specific use. Wilson is vice-president of technical services at Timber Specialties Ltd., which provides preservatives and technical assistance to the Canadian wood preservation industry. …He advised the audience to use only treated wood materials from certified plants. …Canadian wood species are generally “refractory” (difficult to treat) primarily because they often have a shallow sapwood band and a nearly impermeable heartwood.

Region: Canada, United States

Our climate is changing. Human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land, according to the 2021 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) report. 39% of global GHG emissions are attributed to the building industry, 11% of which are embodied carbon emissions. Mass timber sequesters carbon and is an increasingly important product in any strategy to reduce carbon emissions from the built environment. KL&A Engineers and Builders and Adolfson & Peterson recently authored a comparative structural life cycle assessment with realistic cost estimates on a constructed project to understand the economic impact of sustainable material choices. They studied Platte Fifteen, a mass timber building in Denver, CO, and determined that for one representative office building under realistic conditions, the design choice of mass timber can bring consequential savings in embodied carbon for little to no building cost premium.

Since entering the Indian market, Forestry Innovation Investment (FII) has been conducting product trials with local manufacturers to increase awareness and uptake of B.C. wood species within India’s domestic furniture sector. While many of these local manufacturers produce products for local use, FII India has also been exploring opportunities in India’s northern region–a primary hub for furniture exports. Responding to the dwindling supply of local wood species, high costs and future availability constraints, FII India focused product trial efforts with manufacturers in the export-focused regions of Rajasthan, Western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi National Capital Region. In addition, trends within international furniture markets have shifted from heavy, antique styles to modern designs with clean lines and smooth finishes, which B.C. species such as Hemlock lend itself to.  These factors have presented exciting opportunities for FII India to introduce B.C. wood products as alternatives to traditional hardwoods.

THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay is trying out a natural by-product of the pulp-making process it describes as a greener, more environmentally-friendly alternative to the asphalt it currently uses to pave its streets. At the Mapleward Road landfill site on Monday, a crew paved an existing gravel road with asphalt that contains lignin. The trial project will help determine whether lignin is suitable in cold climates for replacing some of the bitumen that’s mixed with aggregate to make asphalt. According to FPInnovations, the not-for-profit organization that’s spearheading the trial, lignin is known as the “natural wood glue” as it binds together the cellulose fibres in plants. It’s believed that it could serve the same purpose in the production of asphalt pavement. Thunder Bay is the first location for a trial in Ontario.

Chris Craiker

When we think of commercial and multi-story construction, steel, brick and concrete usually comes to mind. After all, since the late 1800s, our cities have become super muscular, highly dependent on these products. But their toll on our planet and its environment has become devastating. Do we have alternatives to build our future construction growth, expected to increase by 40% by 2040. …Sustainability and environmentally correct construction materials have become a focus of the 21st-century. Tall buildings of timber are in the works throughout Europe. Commercial construction and multi-story buildings, even up to 10 stories, can benefit from the use of wood heavy timber. Technology has shown that heavy timber construction, sometimes called mass timber, allows precise construction and economic production of members faster, low energy production, sustainably harvested and with less manual labor. Timber is local, and production processing can be minimal compared to steel or concrete.

In order to reduce the ‘green’ half of Sweden’s carbon emissions—those that come from the country’s forest industries—Anders Berensson Architects proposes the world’s largest timber structure: the Bank of Norrland. The purpose of this fictional bank is to store carbon dioxide; in the process, it will provide farmers with decent payment for their wood and ensuring continuity for the Swedish building and manufacturing industries in a stormy and unpredictable world, and in times of reduced wood consumption. The bank is designed to be able to store a year’s worth of timber production; the cubic kilometer of stored logs will together form the largest man-made carbon dioxide storage built to date. Through the bank, timber will be stored for future use rather than being immediately burnt for paper or fuel as it is today, a practice that releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Sweetman Renewables Limited… has entered into a joint venture with Singaporean company CAC-Hto construct a hub where hydrogen will be produced by gasifying woodchips. …The companies are branding the enterprise Australia “largest green bio-hydrogen production eco-hub,” though many experts have queried the technical classification of wood as “renewable” and the energy generated by burning it as “net zero” – which relies on questionable carbon accounting, and supports the contentious forestry industry. …Under the deal, CAC-H will bring its gasification technology which converts woodchip into 99.9% pure hydrogen via a proprietary process. …Sweetman is set to provide the facility 30,000 tonnes of wood biomass per annum… to produce hydrogen. …Biomass is attractive to the burgeoning hydrogen industry because it provides predicable, base load power.

Finnish engineers have an encouraging message for householders: wood is good. They don’t just mean that a wooden structure preserves carbon that would otherwise become a greenhouse gas again. They mean that timber homes are a worthwhile investment. They studied real estate sales in two suburbs of Helsinki, between 1999 and 2018 and found that multi-storied timber-built homes changed hands at 8.85% more in value than apartments and houses made of bricks and mortar, or concrete and steel. …But the results are clear: home-buyers think wood is good. …Finland’s Ministry of Environment aims by 2025 to have 45% of new multi-storied buildings made from wood. …researchers have more than once proposed that wood would be a sound basis for high-density housing while at the same time making an active  contribution to helping to slow climate change…

WASHINGTON – American Wood Council CEO Jackson Morrill issued a statement following the House Armed Service Committee’s markup of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which included language to establish a pilot program to evaluate the effects of using mass timber products in Department of Defense military construction projects. “The mass timber pilot program will not only help the Department of Defense address the military’s housing needs but will do so utilizing a low-carbon building solution available today. Increasing the use of wood in construction to the maximum amount in the U.S. would be the equivalent of taking 4.4 million cars off of the road indefinitely, contributing significantly to national 2030 carbon reduction goals.
