SEARSMONT, Maine — Nearly three months after a deadly explosion inside a silo at Robbins Lumber Mill in Searsmont, new federal findings are shedding more light on what happened. According to a report by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)… firefighters responded to flames in a large silo containing wood shavings and sawdust. The silo was described as an oxygen-limiting silo. When crews attempted to extinguish the fire, the report said the mix of oxygen and sawdust created a combustible dust explosion. Ken Desmond, President of the Maine State Federation of Firefighters, said firefighters arriving at the scene did not know what was going to happen. …“Lessons learned what can we do to be better to train and helps get some new tactics to move forward,” he said. Bill Gillespie, President of the Maine Fire Chiefs, emphasized that NIOSH reports are intended to educate, not assign blame.
