BAILEYVILLE, Maine — The owners of a Maine pulp mill are contesting federal workplace safety citations and nearly $800,000 in proposed penalties issued after an investigation into a toxic gas release that killed two workers in Baileyville. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says workers at Woodland Pulp were performing a cold weather shutdown, which caused high concentrations of deadly, uncontrolled, hydrogen sulfide gas to release into the plant on January 27. …OSHA issued four willful citations and six serious citations for the January incident. An additional six serious citations were issued. The company was also ordered to pay $612,392 in fines for that incident. …The fines for the March infractions came to $182,064. The case is now in litigation before the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
