Metsä Group has discontinued its operations in Russia for the time being. The group operates one sawmill in Svir, in Russia’s Leningrad region. The plant produces sawn timber with a capacity of 285,000 m³ of which 95 per cent is destined to export markets. “Wood procurement in Russia for the Svir sawmill and imports to Metsä Group’s Finnish and Swedish mills has also been discontinued”, the group explained in a short statement yesterday. In 2020, Metsä Group’s wood procurement totalled 32.7 million m³ of which 24.6 million m³ were used by Metsä Group’s own mills. 79 per cent of the wood used in 2020 was procured from Finland, 7 per cent from Russia, 7 per cent from Sweden and 7 per cent from the Baltic countries, according to the group’s 2020 sustainability report.
