Post and beam and timber frame are both beautiful methods of building but most people think of them as one and the same. Although they are similar, there are subtle differences between them.  Both are methods of building that create a frame that is self-sustaining and carries the weight of the house. The main difference in the two types of construction is the method of joining the parts. Timber frames are always made with solid wood with mortise-and-tenon connections and secured with wood pegs. Post and beam construction typically uses half lap joinery with hidden fasteners, and decorative metal braces some of the time. The other difference is in the type of wood that is used.
