LONGVIEW, Washington — While one workplace safety expert has described the early results of a federal investigation into the Longview chemical spill as “disappointing and upsetting,” Nippon Dynawave Packaging officials are relaying their own frustration about the update. …Marissa Baker, who leads the University of Washington’s Industrial Hygiene program in Seattle, highlighted the repeated warnings from an inspecting contractor in the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board’s investigation update issued Friday. They indicate to her that the fatal May 26 collapse of the white liquor tank at the Longview liquid packaging paperboard plant could have been prevented. …According to Nippon Dynawave Packaging, the CSB’s initial investigation update “failed to include important facts and context” about the 10 months leading up to the catastrophic collapse. …”Certainly it likely contributed,” Baker said. “And the price the company paid for putting off that maintenance and deferring the maintenance was the 11 workers.”
