In the 1940s, the McLean Lumber was logging the slopes of the Beaufort Range overlooking the Alberni Valley. The steep grades were a problem for the drivers bringing the loaded trucks down to the sawmills, so when the McLeans had the opportunity in 1945, they bought a truck with special order, extra-large brake drums from Hayes Manufacturing of Vancouver. It was one of the first Hayes trucks to work in the Alberni Valley. The McLeans later they bought a 13-ton, six-cylinder second-hand 1947 model. The two trucks handled all of McLean Lumber’s hauling until the outfit shut down in 1972. …After operations ceased at McLean Lumber Co., the trucks were left in the garage until volunteers decided to restore “Yeller” in 1985. …The 1947 Hayes and other R.B. McLean Lumber Company trucks can be seen at the Industrial Heritage Centre on Ninth Avenue at Dunbar Street.
