PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Nearly a decade after the devastating 2017 wildfire season transformed Prince George into a major evacuation centre, the city is continuing to build its wildfire resilience, but officials warn the grant funding supporting much of that work is becoming less certain. The fires of 2017 were a wake-up call for communities throughout the Interior. …Today, wildfire preparedness is a significant part of the city’s resiliency efforts, ranging from forest fuel treatments to FireSmart programs intended to help residents protect their own homes. …But the city’s ability to conduct fuel treatments has limits. The city can carry out those projects only on land it owns. Crown land fall under the Ministry of Forests, while work on private property is the landowner’s responsibility. That makes education and FireSmart initiatives an important part of the city’s strategy. …the next challenge may be ensuring there is stable funding to keep that prevention work going.
