BERLIN, New Hampshire — House lawmakers on Thursday sustained Gov. Chris Sununu’s veto of continued subsidies for Berlin’s Burgess BioPower plant. House Bill 142 would have helped keep the 10-year-old wood-burning facility afloat by providing a critical financial extension. It was passed by lawmakers this session with bipartisan support, but Thursday’s vote on Sununu’s veto of the bill fell short of the two-thirds majority needed for override, 194-159. …Supporters of the plant say it provides needed energy diversity during difficult winter months and bolsters the timber industry in an area reeling from the decline of paper mills even though the energy production is less financially efficient than traditional energy sources. But Sununu felt the state had been too hospitable for too long, and that it should stop keeping Burgess BioPower afloat. He cited more than $200 million in subsidies since 2014.

NASHVILLE, Ill. — Agricultural weedkillers are slowly killing trees across Missouri and Illinois, scientists, state workers and landowners say. Landowners say 200-year-old oaks have gotten sickly. State conservation workers are documenting trees with curling leaves and forests with thinning canopies. Scientists have studied hundreds of trees and found widespread evidence of chemicals in their leaves.  The signs are spreading across the region, from farms to conservation areas to some of Illinois’ largest forests. Many affected trees have already died or been logged, and experts and property owners fear that others will be pushed past their limits in the next few years, if the chemical exposure persists. “It’s pretty scary,” said Robbie Doerhoff, a forest entomologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation who leads the agency’s forest health program. She said she sees a “slow and cumulative” ecosystem-wide impact.

Here’s how hard the wildfires hit Louisiana’s timber industry

Greater Baton Rouge Business Report
November 3, 2023
Category: Forestry
Region: United States, US East

Wildfires that engulfed more than 50,000 acres of Louisiana forests during this summer’s record-breaking heat and drought dealt a blow of at least $71 million to the state’s timber sector, according to LSU AgCenter estimates. That figure is expected to climb higher as wildfires continue to burn in some areas. A total of 52,883 acres of forests statewide had burned as of mid-October, says Robbie Hutchins, an area forester with the LSU AgCenter. Most of that timber would normally be worth at least $1,500 per acre, and little of it is salvageable now. Conservatively, Hutchins estimates 75% of trees on burned acreage are a total loss or considerably devalued, amounting to a loss of about $60 million. But the percentage of unsellable timber is likely closer to 90%, he said, putting the loss estimate at $71 million. …Timber is Louisiana’s No. 1 agricultural commodity, generating more than $10 billion yearly in economic activity.

WISCONSIN — Republican lawmakers are considering a bill that would let the forest products industry truck heavier loads on more routes near the Michigan-Wisconsin border, a move supporters say would save time and money, but one that transportation officials warn would further damage the state’s roads. …Normally, Wisconsin’s DOT limits trucks to carrying 80,000 pounds, but state transportation officials can grant so-called “Michigan border permits” for overweight vehicles. Under those permits, trucks are allowed to abide by Michigan’s maximum weight limit, which is 164,000 pounds, or more than twice the normal limit in Wisconsin. Wisconsin has already designated a number of timber routes that allow trucks to haul more weight, and the Republican-authored bill would add 10 more. …Henry Schienebeck, of the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association, said the change would allow them to carry heavier loads and spread out the weight, so they don’t damage the roads.

A Madison County wildfire that broke out near the community of Syria Oct. 24 has now spread to almost 2,500 acres as state and local firefighters work to contain it. While no structures have been damaged by the blaze to date, Madison County officials have issued a voluntary evacuation for residents north of Finks Hollow Lane, which lies near the border of Shenandoah National Park. The Quaker Run Fire, named for another nearby road, has breached two containment lines since it began. Frequently called fire lines or fire breaks, these perimeters of earth are cleared by firefighters to halt a wildfire’s advance by depriving it of fuel. An initial 650-acre containment line was not completed before the fire advanced beyond its limits early last week. While firefighters went on to construct a larger 1,250-acre perimeter, the blaze broke through it Thursday and then on Saturday breached a 1,600-acre line.

ETOWAH, Tenn. — A wildfire is burning in the Cherokee National Forest near Etowah, Tennessee. Federal wildland firefighters are working to suppress the fire, which is burning southeast of Etowah in steep terrain. The fire is on Starr Mountain in a remote location. The Cherokee National Forest says it does not pose an immediate threat to people or structures. Firefighters started working around 3:40 p.m. on Sunday and continued late that night. “The steep, remote location of the fire makes it inaccessible by ground crews limiting suppression tactics to firing operations that create a burned perimeter around the fire. The burned perimeter reduces fuel for additional fire spread,” the Cherokee National Forest said in a press release.
