The TLA, together with the ILA, NWLA and MNP is pleased to share the 2026 Timber Harvest Cost Model. This model was developed to provide contractors with reliable data to support contract negotiations and align with government requirements. These rates reflect the required revenues of a contractor who runs a reasonably efficient operation.  

ACCESSING THE BC TIMBER HARVEST COST MODEL 

The BC Timber Harvest Rate Model calculates the hourly rates for equipment used in BC’s forest industry. It is designed to give contractors a baseline rate for a selected piece of equipment, serving as a starting point for setting rates. 

There are two options available for accessing the cost model: a downloadable, printable guide for quick reference, or an online calculator to adjust parameters specific to your operation.

The inputs used in the calculations for the rate guide have been gathered from contractors, equipment manufacturers, service providers and administrative sources.

The costs provided in the rate guide may vary based on specific operations. Parameters such as labour, fuel, overhead and equipment financing can be adjusted to calculate rates tailored to specific needs using the online calculator. 

Background 

The Truck Loggers Association, the Interior Logging Association and the Northwest Loggers Association worked with MNP LLP, a Canadian accounting and consulting firm to develop the operating cost model for BC logging contractors.  

In May 2025, the beta version of the model was launched and shared with the BC contractor community. Since then, MNP has been gathering feedback from users to identify enhancements that will help contractors determine appropriate equipment rates.  

In response to that feedback, MNP have made a number of changes to the model, including changes to how the rates are presented. They have also produced this Rate Guide which provides a consolidated list of the rates that have been developed to date. Included in the Rate Guide are the key assumptions and data sources that have been used to enable you to determine appropriate rates for your operations.  

It is important to note that the Rate Guide will continue to evolve as MNP gathers additional data and feedback. Their ability to produce a comprehensive guide that meets your needs is dependent on your willingness to share your information with MNP.
