OTTAWA – Forest fires in Canada this year have released 290 million tonnes of carbon, doubling a previous annual record, and emissions are set to rise as hundreds of flames remain active across the country, according to the EU’s Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service. The estimated Canadian fires emissions account for over 25% of the global total for 2023 to date, and are well above the previous Canadian record of 138 million tonnes registered in 2014, Copernicus said on Thursday. Satellite monitoring of emissions began in 2003. This year’s wildfire season is also the worst on record for area burned, with about 131,000 square kilometres (50,579 square miles) already scorched across eastern and western Canada. That’s about the size of Greece, and greater than the combined area burned in 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2022, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. …Scientists are especially concerned about what Canada’s fires are putting into the atmosphere — and the air we breathe.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Wildfires on both sides of Adams Lake in the B.C. Interior have prompted evacuation orders as crews continue to battle the blazes over the long weekend.   A post by the Columbia Shuswap Regional District on Sunday says the Lower East Adams Lake wildfire has grown minimally, days after residents were hastily evacuated after a drastic wind shift began blowing the fire toward lakeside properties.   The regional district says heavy smoke has made visibility poor and weather conditions are poised to increase the fire’s behaviour due to dry and hot conditions.  More than 90 properties in the regional district remain on evacuation order, and on the other side of the lake, 13 properties on a forest service road were ordered evacuated Sunday afternoon due to the Bush Creek East wildfire.

ADAMS LAKE, BC — An out-of-control wildfire northeast of Kamloops, B.C., has prompted the evacuation of nearly 100 lakeside and residential properties and put another nearby 75 on alert. The Lower East Adams Lake Fire has been burning next to Adams Lake since July 12 next to Adams Lake, and it has recently grown to 2,527 hectares in size — threatening properties, businesses, and a generally popular summer destination for those living in the area. According to the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, the evacuation order was issued on Wednesday but later expanded as imminent danger from the fire grew. Tsutswecw Provincial Park has been issued an evacuation alert as well. The BC Wildfire Service cites difficult terrain and a drastic wind shift that caught crews off guard as reasons why a formerly docile wildfire started aggressively moving toward homes near Adams Lake.

WHISTLER, BC — Crews fighting an aggressive wildfire northwest of Whistler, B.C., will be working Thursday to steer flames away from any more buildings after at least five properties were lost. The Squamish Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) said the Downton Lake wildfire, burning 110 kilometres northwest of Whistler, B.C., isn’t showing signs of letting up. “What we have not heard is that this is abating in anyway. The situation is still very dangerous for our first responders,” said SLRD chair Jen Ford. Ford said officials have now confirmed five structures were lost, despite having difficulty accessing the area. “There are for sure more [structures lost], however, our team has not yet been able to do a proper assessment of the area,” she said in an interview with CBC’s The Early Edition on Thursday.

Owen Rose said his “worst fears were realized” as he watched an out-of-control wildfire creep over a ridge and race toward Gun Lake in southern British Columbia, destroying about a dozen properties in its path. “It was shocking to see how fast it was coming down and then it hit a little cabin, or a boathouse, and it hit another little structure and the trees were candling around it before the smoke became really intense,” he said in an interview Tuesday. Flames from the lightning-caused Downton Lake wildfire, 110 kilometres northwest of the Resort Community of Whistler, have made steady progress through steep, wooded terrain at the western end of Gun Lake since the blaze was sparked on July 13. The fire suddenly flared on Monday.

White trucks fill a parking lot down a dusty road next to the airport in Vanderhoof, B.C. It’s usually a sleepy place with just a few Cessnas flying in and out. But in recent months the parking lot has transformed into a home base for firefighters attached to the Vanderhoof-Fort St. James wildfire complex in Central B.C. This is where incoming international firefighters meet their beleaguered local counterparts, a welcome relief for those who have been on the front lines for weeks and sometimes months. Out of nearly 250 firefighters deployed to the wildfire complex right now, there are almost 100 international personnel alongside another 75 from the Canadian Armed Forces. The international teams, mostly from Mexico, the U.S., and Australia, bring an injection of energy and morale, and often a wealth of experience.

August can be the most challenging month for B.C. wildfires, says Minister Ma

As wildfires spread south and closer to urban areas during what could be the most difficult month for wildfires, the provincial government will spare no cost and effort. Emergency Management Minister Bowinn Ma and Forest Minister Bruce Ralston delivered that message during the latest update on the wildfire and drought situation. …”As the wildfires begin to move further south, we will see more populations impacted as well, which means the increased likelihood of more evacuation alerts and orders,” Ma said. …Perhaps the most illustrative example of Ma’s prediction was the evacuation of parts of Osoyoos last weekend as the Eagle Bluff fire spread aggressively across the border with the United States into the Canada. That fires continues to grow, but the evacuation zone has shrunk as the fire moves away. “We will do what it takes and to spend whatever it takes to fight these wildfires and support communities through these evacuations,” she said.

The Yukon’s wildfire season has taken a turn for the worse in recent days, according to emergency officials, with 80 new fires sparked in the last week.  And with more lightning expected in the coming days, officials are bracing for still more — while preparing for the possibility that there’s no available firefighting help from outside the territory.  “This territory’s wildfire season has escalated dramatically in the recent days, due to lightning activity,” said Mike Fancie, Yukon’s fire information officer, at a briefing on Monday afternoon.  More than half of those new fires — 42 — are in the Dawson fire district, and 20 are in the Old Crow district.   No Yukon communities are currently at risk, officials said. There are still three evacuation alerts in place, for the Dublin Gulch area near Keno City, the Sixtymile area south of Top of the World Highway, and from kilometres 10 to 35 of the Silver Trail.

…The Taylor Creek wildfire was discovered Wednesday evening on the lake’s east side, south of Momich Lakes Park. As of late Thursday morning, July 27, the fire was estimated to be .1 hectares in size. Lightning was the suspected cause.  Southeast of the Taylor Creek fire, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) maintained aerial efforts to control the 2,000-hectare Lower East Adams Lake fire.  Late Thursday afternoon, the Shuswap Emergency Program (SEP) issued an update on the fire and the work being done. Reduced fire behaviour was supporting firefighting efforts and, according to the BCWS, there was no expectation of fire behaviour increasing at the time.  “The reduction in fire behaviour is allowing BCWS to attack the fire more directly with air resources,” said SEP. “This means aircraft are better able to work on the front of the fire, helping to reduce its spread.”

Due to the extreme fire situation the province finds itself in, it has many people wondering why untrained people are not being told to go on the fire lines. I am a trained and certified forest firefighter and fought fires from 1985-1996, so I do understand and know what I am talking about.   Putting untrained people on the fire line is very dangerous and a hazard to anyone around them. I should know as when I fought, I usually was the only trained person on the crew aside from the crew boss. The rest were off the street, as that was common practice at the time.  The problem with that is you have a crew of untrained people that didn’t have proper clothing or footwear and then you give them a shovel, pulaski tool or a hose can and tell them to make a fire line.

The smoke from the wildfire that burned four homes in Behchokǫ̀, Northwest Territories, has cleared enough that air tankers can start working in full force to slow the fire’s growth. Crews fighting British Columbia’s largest-ever wildfire are hoping a “heavy, prolonged rain” in the forecast can help them turn the corner on the massive blaze. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the northeastern corner of the province where the Donnie Creek fire has burned close to 6,000 square kilometres of forest land. The weather statement says a low-pressure system over Alberta will interact with the east Rockies, leading to heavy rain in northeastern B.C., creating accumulation of up to 70 millimetres until Thursday morning. Prince George Fire Centre Information Officer Julia Caranci says the rain in the forecast is “very good news,” but they remain cautious because it may not fall evenly across the large area of the fire.

As the threat to northern Quebec Cree communities from historic wildfires diminishes, the Cree Nation’s top firefighter is looking to a future where destructive blazes like those that have been burning for weeks become more common. In hopes of reducing such losses in the future, Blacksmith is pushing to get more Cree trained as auxiliary forest firefighters. This month,70 people have gone through the training — 40 from inland communities where the fires are no longer a threat and 30 from the coastal communities near where fires continue to burn. The last group finished their training last week, he said, and were scheduled to be deployed within days. He said it took years to get Quebec’s forest fire prevention agency, SOPFEU, to agree to the training for his people. “We had to push them, we had to keep asking,” he said. Now he wants to expand it to ensure necessary resources are available.
