An “unprecedented” start to the wildfire season in Canada has led to serious wildfires spreading destruction and forcing evacuations across seven provinces and one territory, Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair said Thursday. Blair told reporters that over the month of May, roughly 2.7 million hectares of forest went up in flames in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Northwest Territories. “These conditions this early in the season are unprecedented and deeply concerning to all Canadians,” Blair said, adding that over the past 10 years, the average number of hectares burned in May was only 150,000. At Thursday’s briefing, government ministers confirmed that 211 fires are burning now — 82 of them out of control — and said the crisis is being driven by climate change. “It’s a simple fact that Canada’s experiencing the impacts of climate change, including more frequent and more extreme wildfires,” Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Six new wildfires started in the region over the weekend due to natural causes, according to BC Wildfire Service (BCWS). The fires are located north of Kotcho Lake, south of Coffee Lake Road, near Arrow Creek, near Kobes Creek and south of Heck Creek. All but one of the fires are out of control. Now part of the Donnie Creek Complex, a wildfire was discovered on June 3rd near Heck Creek. It is out of control at 1,120 hectares. Through the weekend, the fires in the complex did receive some rain, which reduced fire behaviour a bit. However, the land is drying back out fairly quickly in the area, and no more rain is forecasted in the near future, according to BCWS. The Donnie Creek wildfire, part of the Donnie Creek Complex, did grow to approximately 240,480 hectares, mainly due to two planned ignitions on Thursday and Friday.

The distance from Sayward, with a population of about 350, remains at around 5.6 kilometres. “Twenty per cent of the fire is burning into steep slopes and inaccessible terrain,” Kelly said. She said that wind was expected Sunday but firefighters were prepared for it.

My boat is ready, I got gas in there, I got water, I got food, I’ve got a generator, my coffee pot and my dog.” On Tuesday evening, an evacuation order was issued for Fort Chipewyan, about 730 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, as an out-of-control fire burns about 10 kilometres north of the community.

Nova Scotia: Why are wildfires raging in Canada’s eastern province?

Wildfires are common in Canada’s western provinces, but this year the eastern province of Nova Scotia is reeling from its worst-ever wildfire season… The Atlantic province has had nearly 200 wildfires so far this year that have burned more than 19,000 hectares and displaced more than 25,000 people. In 2022, there were just 152 fires that burned 3,390 hectares. …Nova Scotia’s climate is heavily influenced by the North Atlantic Ocean, which brings higher humidity and more moderate temperatures than many other parts of the country. Fires tend to be much smaller than those in the west. …Atlantic Canada received low snowfall this winter, followed by an exceptionally dry spring. …Ellen Whitman, with the Canadian Forest Service, said there is speculation that trees felled during Hurricane Fiona in 2022, or killed by an infestation of forest pests may be providing more fuel than usual for wildfires, but that theory requires further investigation.

For much of May 2023, wildland fires raged in western Canada. In the last few days of the month, blazes flared up thousands of miles to the east as well, in the Atlantic province of Nova Scotia. The fires, unusually large for Nova Scotia, forced the evacuation of thousands of people. Smoke billowed from a fire near the town of Shelburne on May 29, when an astronaut on the International Space Station took this photograph. By the morning of May 31, after four days of burning, the fire had scorched 17,000 hectares (66 square miles) near the southern tip of Nova Scotia. It became the largest forest fire in the province’s history. On May 29, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured a wider view of the blaze in Shelburne County (below). The fire grew rapidly from 6,000 hectares on that day to 17,000 hectares two days later, due to dry and windy conditions.

Barrington Lake in Shelburne County in southwest Nova Scotia has declared a local state of emergency as a wildfire burns out of control, forcing hundreds of residents from their homes. The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (DNRR) said Monday evening the fire has grown to 9,682 hectares. Some structures have been destroyed and others are threatened but there are no firm numbers yet, it said. The RCMP said Monday roughly 450 homes have been evacuated so far, affecting roughly 1,500 people in Shelburne County. In some instances, the department said flames have been as high as 200 feet. Gusts of wind between 40 and 50 km/h blowing embers aren’t helping matters. Scott Tingley, the department’s manager of forest protection said, “down in Barrington we’ve been fighting hot, dry, windy conditions since Friday – that is the main contributing factor to why these fires are growing”.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A prescribed burn became a wildfire Tuesday after wind pushed the monitored blaze onto National Forest land east of Eugene, U.S. Forest Service officials said. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the burn was being conducted in the McKenzie River Ranger District to help reduce fuels in the area. The blaze is located past McKenzie Bridge, east of where the Holiday Farm Fire scorched the area in 2020. The 65-acre burn was under control when officials said that winds caused two spot fires that spread, causing the fire to now be about 120 acres in size. The burn was quickly declared as a wildfire, which the Forest Service said allowed additional personnel to be deployed to contain the blaze. Thirty-four firefighters worked overnight and authorities said that more are on their way, including three hand crews.

MICHIGAN – The wildfire southeast of Grayling was 90% Monday, with fire crews hoping to have full containment by the end of the day, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The agency said the fire prompted a closure of Interstate 75 for much of Saturday and temporary evacuations of some homes, threatened 35 homes …three of which burned. What the DNR is calling the Wilderness Trail Fire started Saturday with a campfire on private land in Crawford County. The agency asked that people stay away and emphasized that crews continue to work to suppress the blaze and assess damage. The fire remains at 2,400 acres, and roads near the fire remain closed, though crews hoped to be able to reopen secondary roads in the area and restore access to Kneff and Staley lakes. Railroad companies needed access to inspect potentially affected tracks north of 4 Mile Road, to see if rail activity can safely resume.

BASS RIVER, N.J. — After days of firefighting efforts, the massive wildfire in Bass River State Forest is now 100% contained, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service said Saturday. The fire that broke out this week grew to over 5,000 acres, sending smoke for miles and creating hazy skies around the region. The smoke was so thick it closed the Garden State Parkway for a few hours due to visibility issues. “The public is advised that smoke may be visible for an extended period while firefighters work to mop-up the wildfire,” NJFFS said. “Motorists traveling in the area should remain cautious of smoke.” It was by far the largest “major” wildfire in the state this week. In a news conference, NJFFS Chief Greg McLaughlin said the fire was 5,950 acres and that the service had fought nine major wildfires this year. The service battles three to four major wildfires in a typical year.

FIFE LAKE, Michigan – A small campfire at a private residence quickly turned into a “raging forest fire” spanning over 100 acres in Northern Michigan over Memorial Day weekend. About 136 acres were affected near the city of Manton in Northwest Michigan. It’s unclear exactly what time the fire began spreading, but officials said it was contained by 10 p.m. on Sunday “before it jumped the Manistee River.” …The Michigan DNR says it will not be issuing any burn permits at this time due to the “very dry” conditions.
