Wildfires rip across Canada as heat wave smashes temperature records

By Evan Bush

Region: Canada

High temperature records fell by the dozen this week as western Canada continued to suffer in a prolonged, scorching heat wave.  About 90 wildfires, spurred on by unusually high temperatures, continue to burn in Alberta. Smoke blanketed the province in unhealthy air and dipped across the border into the U.S., according to satellite photos. The heat wave pattern — described as an “omega block” by meteorologists — resembles in some ways the record-breaking heat event in Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest in June 2021, which killed hundreds of people. The intense spring wildfires in Alberta are reminiscent of the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, which is considered one of Canada’s costliest natural disasters. “This is a very unusual pattern. We often don’t see these types of patterns set up this early in the year. We see these patterns in the summer,” said Terri Lang, a warning preparedness meteorologist for Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Enough rain to prompt a warning is expected in the next few days across Alberta’s foothills and to the north of Edmonton. It’s perhaps not enough to put out wildfires completely, but may help firefighters catch their breath… “This could be a turning point for the firefighters working out there on the fires,” Christie Tucker of Alberta Wildfire said during Monday’s daily fire update. Environment Canada said 50 to 75 mm of rain is expected between Monday and Wednesday. …Rain showers will continue with rainfall intensifying Monday afternoon, the national weather agency said, adding widespread heavy rain will continue until the middle of the week. …Alberta Wildfire is hoping for long steady rain that will soak into the ground, rather than short bursts that will bring lightning that could start a new wildfire. …Lightning strikes have already been detected in the Edson and Grande Prairie areas, Tucker said on the weekend.

Crews battling a 215-square-kilometre wildfire near Fort St. John in northeastern British Columbia got some unexpected help in the fight. An information officer with the B.C. Wildfire Service says the amount of smoke in the area was enough to provide a buffer from the sun’s heat, which had been expected to cause problems for crews at the Stoddart Creek blaze and others nearby. Hannah Swift said there was enough of a break in the smoke to allow crews to launch helicopters to fight the fire about 25 kilometres from Fort St. John. She said the blaze is not believed to have grown substantially in the last 24 hours. …The forecast suggests possible rain over the weekend, although Swift said there’s also the potential for thunderstorms, which could bring lightning.

ALBERTA — Drayton Valley Mayor Nancy Dodds said it was emotional to return home nearly two weeks after an out-of-control wildfire forced residents to flee, but thousands elsewhere remain on edge as scores of fires continue to rage across much of the West. We call it the burn area or the black area. There are concerns about falling trees, there are concerns about ash pits,” he said. More than 11,900 people in Alberta remain forced from their homes. Alberta’s unprecedented wildfire crisis threatens to drag on through the summer months. As of Wednesday afternoon, 91 wildfires are burning inside Alberta’s forest protection areas, and 27 are classified as out of control, Alberta Wildfire information unit manager Christie Tucker said. THUNDER BAY — Only one active forest fire was reported in Northwestern Ontario as of Monday, but the wildfire hazard has become a concern. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports that the hazard has reached high across the entire southern portion of the region, and extreme in parts of the Red Lake district near the Manitoba border. Elevated temperatures, wind and an absence of rain are contributing factors. The lone forest fire in the region is in the the MNRF’s Thunder Bay district, near Rushbay Lake which is southwest of Armstrong. The blaze, which is not under control, was discovered Saturday evening and has consumed about six hectares so far. [END]

Volunteer fire departments on Newfoundland’s south coast pulled together Sunday to fight a forest fire in Harbour Breton, which came dangerously close to the homes of 300 residents. Mayor Lloyd Blake said the situation kicked off around 4 p.m., when a grass fire on the scenic town’s north side spread to the forest. …An evacuation plan was put into action, with 300 residents being moved. Eighteen of the town’s volunteer firefighters went to work lugging hoses up the north side hills by hand. The town called on the province’s Fire and Emergency Services division for help, and was initially told a water bomber was being deployed to the area. However, Blake said they were told the water was too cold this time of year for the bomber to collect. …Together, they were able to douse the flames and get residents back in their homes by 11 p.m. Blake said the flames came within 50 feet of some people’s houses.

OREGON — Small wildfires have popped up across western Oregon over the past few days as hot temperatures and windy conditions put firefighters on high alert. At least three significant fires ignited when slash or burn piles escaped in the Willamette Valley area and required a response from the Oregon Department of Forestry. Far more smaller-scale fires from burn piles were handled by local firefighters, officials said. At least one lightning-ignited fire from Monday night’s thunderstorm was doused south of Eugene. The trend is expected to continue with at least four more days above 80 degrees forecast. “Our firefighters are on high alert,” ODF fire spokeswoman Jessica Prakke said. “It’s our first warm and dry stretch and people are wanting to burn debris or get out and camp. Even though it’s still May, when it turns dry like this fires can start and people need to be cautious and prepared.”

The challenge of managing Eastern North Carolina’s forests amid population growth, changing climate

…the Great Lakes Fire continues to burn in the Croatan National Forest 15 days after it started. As of Wednesday morning, the N.C. Forest Service said the large wildfire had charred an estimated 32,400 acres and was 65% contained. The big blaze is a reminder that Eastern North Carolina is prime fire country, a natural and needed element of the Cape Fear region’s environment − and one that will occur regularly whether residents like it or not. …Wildfires are necessary for a number of Southeastern North Carolina’s indigenous species, including the longleaf pine and Venus’ flytrap, to thrive and reproduce. Without periodic burns, the areas these fire-adapted and dependent species need can become choked with other vegetation, damaging native environments and knocking local ecosystems out of whack. …Another issue is where people are seeking to live … the number of people living within or adjacent to forested areas that either haven’t burned in decades…

The alarm has been raised over the increased likelihood of wildfires in parts of southern France. The prefect of Pyrénées-Orientales department says the lack of rain and wind gusts of up to 90km/h predicted on Tuesday mean the risk was now ‘very severe’. Authorities are trying to avoid a repeat of France’s first major forest fire of the year, which burned up to 1,000 hectares of land in Pyrénées-Orientales. It comes after some areas of the department were last week placed under a drought ‘crisis’ level due to lack of water. …The department also banned the sale of above-ground pools to prevent residents from being “tempted” to break drought rules and fill them up. …With water scarce, firefighters say they are having to turn to the sea and rivers for supplies.

RUSSIA — Several people have been killed, more than 300 homes destroyed and states of emergency declared in two Russian regions as forest fires raged across western Siberia, news agencies reported Monday. The governors of the Tyumen and Kurgan regions issued back-to-back emergency declarations Sunday as residents were evacuated and efforts to contain the fast-moving flames proved unsuccessful. Siberia’s Omsk region declared a state of emergency later Monday. …The death toll reached six by Monday morning. …Russia’s forest management authority said 154 forest fires in 18 mostly Siberian and Far East regions have engulfed 93,300 hectares of land nationwide as of Monday. …In Russia, the problem has been exacerbated by a lack of resources for firefighting combined with the remote locations of many fires.
