Emergency officials have ordered all residents to evacuate from the B.C. community of Olalla, about 40 kilometres southwest of Penticton, due to the Keremeos Creek wildfire. The unincorporated town, with a population of more than 400, was put under full evacuation orders Thursday afternoon, affecting roughly 200 properties, around 5 p.m. by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen. A half-hour later, residents from part of the village of Keremeos, B.C., representing nearly 220 properties, were placed on evacuation alert by municipal and regional authorities, “This afternoon, the approaching cold front brought much higher winds than we’ve been seeing over the last couple of days, which increased the fire behaviour,” said Mikhail Elsay, a fire information officer with B.C.’s wildfire service. “We felt like we needed to expand the evacuation orders just to protect the communities that are fairly close to the fire.”

Dozens more homes are now on evacuation alert as an out-of-control wildfire continues to burn in B.C.’s Interior. The Keremeos Creek wildfire has grown to an estimated 4,250 hectares since it was discovered roughly 21 kilometres southwest of Penticton on Friday. The cause remains unknown. The increase in size, according to the BC Wildfire Service, is “due to both natural fire and planned ignitions.” “Planned ignitions are conducted to bring the fire down to control lines so firefighters can action the fire,” the service said in an update posted online Wednesday. “We expect more growth as this fire burns into more inaccessible areas.” …The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen confirmed 479 properties, including the Apex Resort village west of Keremeos, remained evacuated, while residents of another 324 properties in the area were on evacuation alert. Though officials say the blaze is stable, it is slowly creeping closer to people’s properties – and not everyone has heeded the order to leave.

BC firefighters deploy controlled burns to contain Okanagan blaze

Crews were literally fighting fire with fire in the southern Okanagan as the BC Wildfire Service takes advantage of cooler weather to try to contain a blaze that has forced hundreds from their homes. Fire information officer Marg Drysdale told a news conference Wednesday that crews were conducting controlled burns on the southeastern flank of the nearly 28-square-kilometre wildfire burning southwest of Penticton. An aerial ignition was planned for the region as crews burned off trees and bush not far from Highway 3A, which was closed briefly on Tuesday as flames moved closer. …Days of searing heat and low humidity helped fuel the wildfire after it was sparked July 29, but Drysdale said winds Wednesday were “not much of a factor” and “pretty flat,” while the heat was “a couple of degrees cooler,” at higher elevations.

Sustained high temperatures throughout British Columbia this week are increasing the potential for wildfires. Residents, travellers and campers should be prepared for wildfire and heat, to have an emergency plan and to stay informed as conditions change. The BC Wildfire Service is closely monitoring these changing conditions and making necessary preparations with strategic aviation and crew placements. Of note is the potential for widespread lightning when the current weather pattern changes. Wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility. Category 2 and Category 3 open fires are prohibited throughout British Columbia. Campfires are currently permitted within the BC Wildfire Service’s jurisdiction. Escaped campfires can lead to human-caused wildfires, but that does not mean a campfire can’t be enjoyed safely. Patrols will be in place on Crown land.

Firefighters made excellent progress on the Wards Creek Fire between Gold Hill and Rogue River, completely encircling it with fire lines overnight, the Oregon Department of Forestry reported Thursday morning. Overnight mapping showed the fire was at 17 acres. Located near Wards Creek Road, the fire is burning on private and Bureau of Land Management property, ODF said. During the night, firefighters were able to lay enough hose to reach the whole fire with water, and they began mop-up operations. Getting water to the site has been a challenge because the fire is burning on a steep slope with dense brush, ODF said. On Thursday, three 20-person hand crews, a water tender, a bulldozer and ODF supervisors were assigned to the fire. Aircraft will be used as needed. Crews will continue mopping up and focus on securing and holding containment lines.

LOS ANGELES  — The U.S. Forest Service announced Friday it’s taking emergency action to save giant sequoias by speeding up projects that could start within weeks to clear underbrush to protect the world’s largest trees from the increasing threat of wildfires. The move to bypass some environmental review could cut years off the normal approval process required to cut smaller trees in national forests and use intentionally lit low-intensity fires to reduce dense brush that has helped fuel raging wildfires that have killed up to 20% of all large sequoias over the past two years. “Without urgent action, wildfires could eliminate countless more iconic giant sequoias,” Forest Service Chief Randy Moore said in a statement. “This emergency action to reduce fuels before a wildfire occurs will protect unburned giant sequoia groves from the risks of high-severity wildfires.”

GERING, Neb. — Fire crews battling a western Nebraska wildfire that has destroyed some homes looked Tuesday to the skies with hope and trepidation as weather forecasters warned of thunderstorms. The National Weather Service forecast a 50% chance of thunderstorms producing heavy rains Tuesday afternoon into the night. A storm could help douse the Carter Canyon Fire south of Gering that has scorched about 25 square miles (65 square kilometers) of mostly grass and timberland, destroyed three homes and damaged several more in the Carter Canyon community that was evacuated Sunday. While fire crews would welcome rain, they also fear lightning strikes that could spark new fires in the tinder-dry region, said Ben Bohall with the Nebraska Forest Service. Firefighters had contained about 30% of the fire going into Tuesday, and a lot of progress was made late Monday and overnight as winds died down from the 20 mph (32 kph) seen Sunday.

Moroccan firefighters stepped up their efforts on Wednesday to contain forest fires, fanned by fierce winds, that are sweeping across the north of the country, according to local authorities. In the most affected province of Larache, south of Tangier, intervention teams supported by the army were attempting to keep in check fires that were still active and threatening villages, local sources told AFP on Wednesday night. Three Canadair firefighting aircraft made 25 runs over the day. More than 900 families from 15 villages were also evacuated as a preventative measure, the same sources said. …According to agriculture minister Mohamed Sadiki, who also oversees the country’s forests, the total area affected by the recent fires has reached 10,300 hectares. By comparison, 2,782 hectares of forest were destroyed by 285 fires between January and September 2021. Morocco has for several weeks been gripped by scorching temperatures amid abnormally intense drought and stress on water supplies.

The frightening wildfires afflicting Europe during bouts of extreme heat this summer are a scourge the world will see more of in the future, scientists say. That raises questions about what can be done to mitigate their impact as society grapples with the larger challenges of trying to limit the warming of the planet. Though there are steps to be taken to prevent harm to humans and habitat, the bottom line is what we’re seeing in Europe will be an enduring challenge. “What we are witnessing now is a preview of the world we are leaving to our kids,” Víctor Resco de Dios, a professor of forestry at the University of Lleida in Spain, told CBC News. …Recent reports from Europe — which has seen nearly 1,900 wildfires so far this year, almost four times the average from 2006 to 2021 — illustrate the threat such fires already pose.
