A Kamloops woman is facing arson charges for allegedly starting several wildfires in the B.C. Interior. Angela Elise Cornish, 42, was arrested May 11 and charged with four counts of arson. She remains in custody until a bail hearing on Monday. Lisa Hudema of the B.C. Wildfire Service said an “an area of interest” was identified after several human-caused wildfires suspected to be “incendiary in nature” broke out on Crown land this spring. RCMP say a resident in the Monte Lake area was investigating smoke in the hills on April 30 when they noticed a suspicious vehicle, took down the licence plate, and reported the incident to police.

Recent rain cools off wildfire risk in Northern BC

A cooler start to Spring as well as consistent rain through the start of May is helping reduce the risk of wildfire hazard throughout Northern BC. “Part of that comes in with both the accumulated over-Winter precipitation, which kind of refills the moisture in all of the available fuels, but also keeps that ground layer of forest fuels high in moisture content,” said Sharon Nickel, BC Wildfire Service Communications Specialist. “With everything being wetter, it’s harder to ignite, and therefore harder for fire to spread if one were to ignite.” Nickel added that we’ve received above normal levels of precipitation in the North so far. “We are expecting the cooler than normal temperatures to continue through May, but some of the levels we’ve had in the North, particularly up as far as Fort Nelson, we’ve seen almost 150-200% of the typical snowpack.”

KAMLOOPS — BC Wildfire Service say they responded numerous wildfires between Falkland and Kamloops Monday (May 2). In a social media post Monday evening, the wildfire suppression service for the province states the fires are all suspected to be human caused. The fires are under investigation. “The BC Wildfire Service is urging British Columbians to be responsible, remain cautious, and do what they can to prevent human-caused wildfires,” the service states. According to the B.C. Wildfire Dashboard as of Tuesday morning, there are 10 active wildfires within the Kamloops Fire Centre: three new, two being held, and five under control. Two new wildfires were reported between Falkland and Kamloops: a 0.10-hectare fire near Station Forest Service Road north of Westwold and a 0.01-hectare wildfire near 2km Talbot Forest Service Road south of Westwold.

Two new but small wildfires are burning in the Thompson Okanagan region Saturday.  According to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), one fire sparked near Ashcroft and another ignited at Drought Creek and Highway 97C near Peachland April 30.  Both fires are less than 0.01 hectares in size and suspected as being human caused.  BCWS fire information officer Shaelee Stearns said Saturday afternoon that it’s not known whether either fire has grown since being discovered earlier in the day.  On Thursday a larger wildfire sparked in the North Shuswap near St. Ives. As of Friday that blaze had grown to 15 hectares and it’s still classified as out of control. Stearns said there has been no significant growth overnight, and there are still 20 BCWS personnel tackling the blaze. She said a helicopter crew may be on site today to transport gear to the top of the fire.

Slow start to fire season in Northwest Ontario

Plenty of rain and a heavy snowpack made for a slow start to Northwestern Ontario’s forest fire season, but there’s no guarantee it will stay that way into the summer, says the province’s forest fire-fighting agency. Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fires and Emergency Services (AFFES) is also reporting recruitment challenges in the Northwest as it begins the 2022 fire season. Since May 1, AFFES has tracked just 11 fires in the Northwest so far, compared to around 109 at the same time last year, said fire information officer Chris Marchand. …We’ve had this larger than normal snow pack and fairly consistent spring precipitation that has played a role in slowing down fire activity.” …“Things could turn around very quickly in the space of a week,” he said. “If we don’t get consistent precipitation, that will drive fire hazard conditions.”

Officials say that while it’s near impossible to forecast what New Brunswick’s summer months will hold in terms of wildfires, the danger is always present. The province lifted burn restrictions across the board Monday following a wet weekend, but according to Wildfire Prevention Officer Roger Collet, the “green” status doesn’t mean there’s no risk at all. “Last year almost 50 per cent of the fires we had to go to were on days when burning was allowed,” Collet said. According to the province’s “Forest Fire Watch” webpage, crews responded to 80 fires through the 2021 season, well below the running 10-year average of 137 a year. Collet said wet weather kept that number low. So far for 2022, there have been 124 fires logged, burning up 119.6 hectares of forest. According to Collet these figures account for any outdoor fire crews are called to respond to.

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — More than 5,000 firefighters battled multiple wildland blazes in dry, windy weather across the Southwest on Thursday, including a fire that has destroyed dozens of structures in west Texas and another that’s picking up steam again in New Mexico. Evacuation orders remained in place for residents near the wildfires in Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. High winds prevented officials from sending aircraft to drop retardant or water in many places. Dangerous fire weather fueled by gusty winds, high temperatures and extremely low humidity was predicted to continue through Friday — especially in New Mexico, where the largest U.S. wildfire has burned for more than a month and the governor expects the number of structures destroyed will exceed 1,000. …However, the Forestry Service said a new weather pattern by the weekend is expected to usher in cooler temperatures and moisture.

WASHINGTON – From New Jersey to Georgia, U.S. states thousands of miles from wildfire hotspots in the west face a growing risk from forest blazes as global warming makes “safe havens” increasingly rare, researchers warned on Monday. Wildfires pose at least a moderate risk to more than 30 million properties across the United States, according to modeling by First Street Foundation, a nonprofit that maps climate risks. “Wildfire risk is increasing so much faster than even flood risk is across the U.S.,” said Ed Kearns, the group’s chief data officer. “And it’s likely to affect areas that aren’t thought of as wildfire-prone areas right now, but will be soon.” Well beyond hard-hit states such as California and New Mexico, East Coast spots including South and North Carolina are among those with the most properties threatened by fires, the research found.

Much of the growth was on the east side where it ran for about two miles, but when the wind shifted from coming from the west and then north gusting to 30 to 35 mph, it spread to the south where it merged with the Whitetail Fire, which also started from Tuesday’s lightning; it had been stopped at 8 acres, but flared up again Thursday. As of Thursday evening, the additional southward spread had not crossed the Dismal River. Firefighters were battling 90 degree temperatures and strong, shifting winds. Additional firefighting resources are arriving, including hand crews, helicopters, and engines.

Wildfires are on a furious pace early this year, from a California hilltop where mansions with multimillion-dollar Pacific Ocean views were torched to remote New Mexico mountains charred by a month old monster blaze. In both places wind-driven flames have torn through vegetation that is extraordinarily dry from years long drought exacerbated by climate change. As the unstoppable northern New Mexico wildfire chewed through more dense forest Thursday, firefighters in the coastal community of Laguna Niguel doused charred and smoldering remains of 20 large homes that quickly went up in flames and forced a frantic evacuation. …Fire officials said there’s not much they could do to stop the fast-moving flames burning in tinder-dry forests in the Sangre de Christo range. It’s simply too dangerous to put firefighters ahead of a blaze that’s moving this hard and fast through overgrown mountainsides covered with Ponderosa pine and other trees sucked dry of moisture over decades.

Over 1,000 firefighters backed by bulldozers and aircraft battled the largest active wildfire in the U.S. on Saturday after strong winds pushed it across some containment lines and closer to a small city in northern New Mexico. Preliminary overnight mapping imagery indicated that the fire that has burned at least 166 homes grew in size from 103 square miles (266 square kilometers) Friday to 152 square miles (393 square kilometers) by early Saturday, officials said. Those fires have burned roughly 10,610 acres across the state. Officials with the Texas A&M Forest Service said there is potential for large wildfires to occur in the Western/Eastern Hill Country and Rolling Plains through Friday… “Any new fires in grass and brush vegetation will likely be resistant to control, as underlying drought and critically to extremely dry vegetation combine with 100-degree temperatures and periods of elevated to critical fire weather,” fire service officials said. …“Minimal rainfall, hot and dry conditions and an intensifying drought continue to support wildfire activity across the state,” said Wes Moorehead, Texas A&M Forest Service Fire Chief.

PISGAH FOREST, N.C. — The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that the wildfire ravaging Pisgah National Forest is “50% contained.” The “Barnett Branch Fire,” as the USDA calls it, began to burn on Wednesday in the rough terrain of the Pisgah National Forest just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Pisgah Inn. The USDA estimates that the wildfire is at about 370 acres of impact area now that it’s 50% contained. The USDA reports that the fire has grown in size since Friday. “This is due to burnout operations in which firefighters remove the fuels between the containment lines and the fire’s edge to control the intensity of the fire and secure containment lines,” said the USDA. Some parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway were closed due to the wildfire.
Now the span from Highway-276 to the Pisgah Inn has reopened.

LONDON — Russian President Vladimir Putin told regional officials on Tuesday to deal with forest fires in Siberia and said there could be no repeat of last year’s fire season – the biggest on record. Putin said fires were causing significant material damage and posing a threat to life, the environment and the economy. Acting Emergencies Minister Alexander Chupryan told Putin: “Altogether since the start of the year on Russian territory there have been 4,000 forest fires on an area of 270,000 hectares” – an area larger than Luxembourg. The 2021 fire season was Russia’s largest ever, with 18.8 million hectares of forest destroyed by blazes, according to Greenpeace Russia. At least eight people died in Siberia on Saturday as fires ripped through hundreds of buildings in several villages, with high winds hampering efforts to extinguish the blazes.

LAS VEGAS, New Mexico — Wind-whipped flames raced across more of New Mexico’s pine-covered mountainsides on Monday, closing in on a town of 13,000 people where some residents hurried to pack their cars with belongings, others hustled to clear brush from around their homes, and police were called in to help evacuate the state’s psychiatric hospital. Firefighting crews battled on several fronts to keep the fire, the largest burning in the U.S., from pushing into more populated areas. The fire has charred more than 217 square miles and flames could be seen from Las Vegas just a couple miles away. Fire officials said they were encouraged by a forecast for Tuesday but the blaze is expected to keep growing, putting it on track to possibly be one of the largest and most destructive in the state’s recorded history.
