The Nohomin Creek wildfire near Lytton, B.C., remains out of control, with the western flank of the fire showing the most activity, the BC Wildfire Service says.  The fire, which was sparked last week, is currently mapped at 20.58 square kilometres and BC Wildfire is predicting “potentially volatile” fire conditions during peak burning times as hot and dry weather persists in the days ahead.  Monday’s firefight was challenged by afternoon winds gusting up to 60 km/h, BC Wildfire said, but the containment lines the crews have been building on the south, east and north flanks held up well against them.  A portion of the southern corner on the west flank was more active Monday afternoon and BC Wildfire said helicopters will be bucketing in this area as needed on Tuesday.

LOS ANGELES  — The U.S. Forest Service announced Friday it’s taking emergency action to save giant sequoias by speeding up projects that could start within weeks to clear underbrush to protect the world’s largest trees from the increasing threat of wildfires. The move to bypass some environmental review could cut years off the normal approval process required to cut smaller trees in national forests and use intentionally lit low-intensity fires to reduce dense brush that has helped fuel raging wildfires that have killed up to 20% of all large sequoias over the past two years. “Without urgent action, wildfires could eliminate countless more iconic giant sequoias,” Forest Service Chief Randy Moore said in a statement. “This emergency action to reduce fuels before a wildfire occurs will protect unburned giant sequoia groves from the risks of high-severity wildfires.”

Alaska is experiencing wildfire behavior it’s never seen before

Alaska is burning this year in ways rarely or ever seen, from the largest wildfire in a typically mainly fireproof Southwest region to a pair of blazes that ripped through forests and produced smoke that blew hundreds of miles to the the Bering Sea community of Nome, where the normally crystal clear air was pushed into the extremely unhealthy category. Already more than 530 wildfires have burned an area the size of Connecticut and the usual worst of the fire season lies ahead. While little property has burned, some residents have been forced to evacuate and one person was killed — a helicopter pilot died last month when he crashed while attempting to carry a load of equipment for firefighters. Recent rains have helped but longer-term forecasts are showing a pattern similar to 2004, when July rains gave way to high-pressure systems, hot days, low humidity and lightning strikes that fueled Alaska’s worst fire year.

Meteorologists have warned of a “heat apocalypse” in western France as more than 8,500 further people fled their homes to escape a large wildfire sparked by a searing southern European heatwave that has already caused hundreds of deaths. Nearly 25,000 people have been forced to abandon homes, holiday rentals and campsites for emergency shelters in the Gironde département west of Bordeaux, while blazes in Spain, Portugal and Greece have forced thousands more to flee. …“It never stops,” said David Brunner, one of 1,500 firefighters battling to control the Gironde blaze, which since Tuesday has destroyed 14,000 hectares of pine forest near the Dune du Pilat, Europe’s highest sand dune and a summer tourism hotspot. “In 30 years of firefighting I have never seen a fire like this.” …In neighbouring Portugal – where temperatures hit 47C last week – the fires have been brought under control after destroying 12,000-15,000 hectares of land, killing two people and injuring 60 others.

FORESTRY and Land Scotland has issued a wildfire warning as temperatures rocket across Scotland. It has said there is a “very high” risk in eastern and southern Scotland between Tuesday, July 19, and Saturday, July 23.  A tweet posted on their social media issued various pieces of guidance for those out and about over the next few days: It read: “If you see a wildfire, call 999 and ask for the Fire Service. The vast majority of wildfires in Scotland are usually accidental and caused by a stray campfire ember or a dropped cigarette. The social and economic impacts can be considerable as wildfires can be highly damaging to wildlife and their habitats. It can take a large number of firefighters to eventually get everything under control. Wildfires can also burn valuable carbon stores like trees and peatland which release greenhouse gases back into the atmosphere.

The wildfires that have raged in Europe, Africa and North America in recent days have provided some dramatic front pages for newspapers across the world.  Among the worst fires have been in Portugal, where the Correio de Manhã has a front page headline reading “Panic and despair”.  In neighbouring Spain, the ABC newspaper declares an “Avalanche of fires out of control”.   The Observer splashes on a warning from Alok Sharma, the Tory cabinet minister who led last year’s landmark Cop26 UN climate summit, that he may resign if the incoming prime minister fails to commit to net zero plans. …A stark image on the front of Croatian newspaper 24sata shows the normally idyllic Dalmation coast with the simple headline “hell”.

Thousands of firefighters are continuing to battle wildfires in Portugal, Spain and France, as a heatwave shows no sign of easing. In northern Portugal, a pilot died when his waterbombing plane crashed in the Foz Coa area, near the Spanish border. The Portuguese authorities say at least 238 people have died from the heat over the past week. Fires are ravaging areas of France’s south-western Gironde region, where over 12,000 people have been evacuated. Heatwaves have become more frequent, more intense, and last longer because of human-induced climate change. The world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial era began and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to carbon emissions. The French weather service has forecast temperatures of up to 41 degrees in parts of the country’s south on Sunday and new heat records are predicted for Monday.

BEMPOSTA, Portugal — More than 3,000 firefighters battled Thursday alongside ordinary Portuguese citizens desperate to save their homes from several wildfires that raged across the European country, fanned by extreme temperatures and drought conditions linked to climate change. Central Portugal has been particularly hard hit by a spate of blazes this week. In the village of Bemposta, residents used garden hoses to spray their lawns and roofs in hopes they could save them from the raging wall of red flames that approached through the wooden hills late Wednesday. …Temperatures in the interior of the Atlantic country were forecast to hit 44 C (111 F) as hot, dry air blown in from Africa lingers over the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula. In June, 96% of Portugal was classified as being in either in “extreme” or “severe” drought. The hot air and parched ground, combined with strong winds, has created the perfect cocktail for severe wildfires.

Since Tuesday, the flames have been devouring trees, fueled by drought, high temperatures and winds in the towns of Landiras and La Teste-de-Buch, where at least six thousand people, including tourists, were evacuated. According to the Prefecture of Gironde, 2,100 hectares have been destroyed in Landiras and 1,840 hectares in La Teste-de-Buch by fires which have not yet been brought under control, despite the mobilization of hundreds of firefighters and the use of equipment and aerial means. The day before, the fire department specified that between those mobilized and the reinforcements on the way, it expected to have a thousand personnel deployed on the ground. Visiting the area, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, declared yesterday that nine out of 10 fires have a human origin, for which he warned that the arsonists could face up to 30 years in prison if their responsibility is proven.
