Fire will rain down today on massive White Rock Lake blaze

Region: Canada, Canada West

Gelled and ignited gasoline will be dumped from a helicopter today to spark a 3,000 ha. controlled blaze around the edge of the massive White Rock Lake fire. The operation is aimed at burning off trees and shrubs in hard-to-access terrain that would otherwise be consumed by the fire, which has destroyed 81,000 ha of forest between Vernon and Kamloops. Unless the controlled burns are undertaken, there’s a chance the fire could burn for months and even spark up again in the spring, particularly given the extremely dry conditions, the BC Wildfire Service says. “Planned ignitions are the safest way to remove fuel that can burn well into the fall and winter. In 2018, fires that occurred in severe drought areas burned underground over winter and started burning again in the spring,” the BCWS says. …No substantial growth in the size of the fire has been observed the last few days, the BCWS says.

A manager for British Columbia’s wildfire service says conditions are trending in the right direction with the number of fires that threaten public safety and property dropping down to two dozen from 30 early this month. Todd Nessman says cooler temperatures have helped curtail significant fire growth in recent days and crews are making “some excellent progress” on some of the larger blazes. He says there are still areas that haven’t seen significant rain, including parts of the Cariboo and south Okanagan, and the fire service is keeping a close watch on the situation there. Nessman, who’s the manager of wildfire operations with the service, says crews are making “excellent progress” on the western flank of the 809-square-kilometre White Rock Lake fire that destroyed dozens of homes and chased thousands out of areas between Kamloops and Okanagan Lake in B.C.’s southern Interior.

It’s a really dangerous thing to be doing right now. We’re nowhere close to taking those fire bans off. This fire is a perfect example of how fast these things can go,” said Robinson.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  — Just last week, managers overseeing the fight against the massive wildfire scorching California’s Lake Tahoe region thought they could have it contained by the start of this week. Instead, the Caldor Fire crested the Sierra Nevada on Monday, forcing the unprecedented evacuation of South Lake Tahoe and tourists from the alpine lake straddling the California-Nevada state line. That drastic move might never have been needed if authorities could have thrown more firefighters at the blaze when it was small. That didn’t happen because the Dixie Fire was simultaneously raging across the mountain range 100 miles to the north, on the way to becoming the second-largest wildfire in California history. …By the time Caldor approached Lake Tahoe two weeks later, there were 4,000 fire personnel, dozens of water-dropping aircraft and hundreds of fire engines and bulldozers. But all that manpower and equipment were overmatched by tinder dry conditions…

Wildfires were burning 603,132 acres across Oregon and Washington as of Friday morning, officials said.  Nine of the active blazes are in Oregon, while 17 are in Washington. A majority of the fires were sparked by lightning, while a few remain under investigation.  The Ford Corkscrew fire in central Washington has prompted mandatory evacuations northwest of Spokane and damaged 20 buildings. The fire has burnt 15,000 acres since Aug. 15. It was 14% contained as of Friday.   The wildfires still burning in Oregon are nowhere as large as the Bootleg fire, which reached 100% containment Sunday after burning for more than a month. It was the third-largest fire in Oregon since 1900, scorching over 400,000 acres and destroying more than 160 homes.  Fires that remain active are located mostly in forest land and rural parts of the state. However, parts of Lane County remain under evacuation notice from the Middle Fork Complex, which has burned since July 29 and is at 7% containment.

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Crews were digging in and burning out fire lines amid fears that another round of high winds on Saturday will bring renewed fury to Northern California’s Caldor wildfire.  “We have a firefight ahead of us and the wind today is going to make it very challenging,” said Keith Wade, a spokesman with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.  The Caldor fire in the northern Sierra Nevada already destroyed dozens of homes, and authorities on Friday closed down a 46-mile (74-kilometer) stretch of Interstate 50, the main route between the state capital of Sacramento and Lake Tahoe on the Nevada state line.  …Firefighters made progress on the fire’s western side and burned vegetation to starve it of fuel and prevent the flames from heading into the evacuated community of Pollock Pines.

Region: United States, US West

For weeks the wildfires in Northern California — which have so far burned more than 1.3 million acres of land — have mostly skipped across sparsely populated areas and have not required mass evacuations. But the Caldor fire, which began east of Sacramento over the weekend, has changed that equation. As of Wednesday evening, the uncontained blaze had forced about 23,000 residents of El Dorado County to flee or prepare to leave their homes, the governor’s office reported. Nearly a third of those evacuation notices came on Wednesday in a space of less than six hours. The overall number of people under evacuation orders or warnings statewide stood at more than 35,000 people as of Wednesday night. That included more than 7,000 residents affected by the Dixie fire, the second-largest blaze in California’s recorded history. The Dixie has so far burned more than 662,000 acres over four counties since it emerged in mid-July.

PLACERVILLE, California — Millions of acres of national forest in Northern California are being closed because of dangerous fire conditions that already have sent a score of blazes raging through the area and destroyed hundreds of homes. The U.S. Forest Service announced Thursday that beginning on Aug. 22 it will close nine national forests from near Lake Tahoe at the Nevada border on the east all the way west to Six Rivers National Forest, which stretches north to the Oregon border and contains more than 1 million acres of land alone. The Eldorado National Forest already had been closed because of the Caldor Fire, which gutted the Sierra Nevada town of Grizzly Flats this week. The uncontained blaze had destroyed well over 100 square miles (259 square kilometres) of land.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to protect the country’s forests, saying the nation must learn from the “unprecedented” wildfires that engulfed swathes of Siberia. Experts blame the huge fires that have ripped across Russia’s vast territory in recent years on climate change, negligence, and underfunded forestry management services. “We need to learn lessons and radically strengthen the forest protection system,” Putin told a televised meeting of officials of the ruling United Russia party. Putin, a former prominent climate-change skeptic, was speaking ahead of parliamentary elections next month that could see the unpopular United Russia party struggle. He also pledged a significant surge in funding for the efforts.
