Thick layers of smoke blanketing the region is hampering BC Wildfire crews fighting the Talbott Creek fire near Winlaw in the Slocan Valley. BC Wildfire Service said Saturday afternoon (September 12), a thick layer of smoke started to blanket the fire area and as a result of poor visibility, aviation resources were unable to fly as late into the day as they have on previous days. BC Wildfire Service said helicopters fighting the blazes will resume flying when it is safe to do so, but may have to remain grounded for 24 to 48 hours. “With responder safety as the top priority and because many areas of the fire are accessible only by air, fire response options are now limited until the smoke clears,” BC Wildfire Service said.

A wildfire just north of Banff National Park hasn’t grown beyond 676 hectares in size amid cooler weather at the end of the long weekend. The fire is now being held, meaning it’s not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries, according to a Monday update from the Municipal District of Bighorn. “The cool temperatures and rain have lessened fire conditions,” the update said. “Fire crews continue to work the perimeter and suppress hotspots.” …The fire is in a forest reserve at the base of Blackrock Mountain and is about 25 kilometres west of Benchlands. It grew by more than 325 hectares Sunday after nearly tripling in size Saturday evening. The increase is partially due to crews initiating controlled burns to create a fire perimeter, explained Alberta wildfire information officer Travis Fairweather.

A number of single trees are falling in the western flank of the Christie Mountain wildfire after being burned intentionally by crews. Residents are warned these trees are creating visible smoke but that they are burning within the existing fire perimeter. BC Wildfire Service notified locals of this new activity in an update Sept. 1. The fire remains at 2,122.5 hectares in size. Over the next few days, crews will be scanning parts of the western side of the fire, to identify any remaining hot spots. They continue to work on the southeast side of the fire, creating 100-foot mop up from the perimeter of the fire, inwards. In addition, crews will be patrolling hot spots along the east side of the fire, and burning pockets of fuel. Smoke will continue to be visible as a result.

Wind gusts fanned the flames of a wildfire near Canal Flats, B.C., at the southern end of Columbia Lake over the weekend, increasing its size by about four square kilometres, but officials said Monday the wind had calmed down. The B.C. Wildfire Service said winds increased the size of the Doctor Creek fire in the East Kootenays to about 58 square kilometres on Saturday, but the weather has since quietened — though not in an ideal way. …The service said a specialized rappel crew has established helipads to access an area of the fire that is on steep and rocky terrain. Environment Canada is warning of elevated levels of air pollution for most of western Nova Scotia as multiple wildfires continue to burn in the area. …Scott Tingley, manager of forest protection with Nova Scotia’s Department of Lands and Forestry, said crews have responded to at least 16 fires since Wednesday. “We’ve had quite a number of fires in the last three days. Some of those have been lightning-caused fires, some human caused,’ Tingley said. As of Saturday evening, Tingley said crews were dealing with two fires that are considered out of control. …One of the biggest challenges in fighting these fires, he said, is the dryness. “We’ve had such prolonged periods without rain … the fire is burning deep and that makes it harder to extinguish them,” he said. Another challenge has been the remoteness of some of the fires.

Why firefighting alone won’t stop western mega-fire

It’s become a near-annual occurrence. …The yearly eruption of hundreds of wildfires across the West is no longer surprising. What’s surprising is “our society’s ability to continue to tolerate” lives lost and billions of dollars in damages and firefighting costs, year after year, says Tom Harbour, the former director of fire and aviation at the U.S. Forest Service.  Especially, he says, when we know of ways to reduce the risk.  The wave of fires that erupted this week on the West Coast, like previous record-breaking blazes, are further validation of something forest ecologists and fire veterans have been saying for years: that no amount of firefighting resources will avert the next big wildfire. …Instead of treating it as a threat to be swiftly extinguished, communities need to learn to live with fire, as people have before.

President Trump is scheduled on Monday to visit McClellan Park, Calif., east of where a fire, now largely contained, recently burned more than 363,000 acres near Sacramento. The fires trapped firefighters and civilians behind fire lines in Oregon and leveled an entire small town in eastern Washington. Oregon Gov. BOULDER CREEK, CALIF. — When a massive wildfire swept through California’s oldest state park last week it was feared many trees in a grove of old-growth redwoods, some of them 2,000 years old and among the tallest living things on Earth, may finally have succumbed.  But an Associated Press reporter and photographer hiked the renowned Redwood Trail at Big Basin Redwoods State Park on Monday and confirmed most of the ancient redwoods had withstood the blaze. Among the survivors is one dubbed Mother of the Forest.  “That is such good news, I can’t tell you how much that gives me peace of mind,” said Laura McLendon, conservation director for the Sempervirens Fund, an environmental group dedicated to the protection of redwoods and their habitats.

Greek authorities ordered thousands of homes near Athens evacuated Wednesday as a large wildfire raged out of control among scattered country residences, damaging buildings while strong winds that whipped up the flames hampered efforts to contain the blaze. No injuries were reported from the fire southeast of the capital near Keratea, which had abated by late Wednesday with no major active front and only scattered small blazes, the fire service said. It was the worst of the 71 forest fires that broke out in various parts of Greece since late Tuesday. The nearby towns of Anavyssos and Palia Fokea were ordered evacuated as a precaution as flames headed in their direction, together with some smaller settlements in the area. Authorities provided detailed escape routes by road and many evacuees were temporarily housed in local hotels.
