The company behind a remote southern Oregon biofuel facility is selling off its interests because it says it can’t power the plant in a cost effective way. NXTClean Fuels of Houston acquired the former Red Rock Biofuels facility in Lakeview in April 2023 with plans to establish its “Lakeview RNG” plant. It was designed to produce renewable gas, renewable diesel and clean hydrogen. NXTClean Fuels said it planned to sell the site to Tiger Industrial Holdings, which would prepare the site for further redevelopment by Vericarbon, a Utah-based company focused on generating carbon offset credits. NXTClean Fuels has also proposed a controversial $2.5 billion biofuel refinery along the Columbia River at the deepwater port of Port Westward industrial. Environmental groups have sued to reverse that project’s permit approvals. Biofuels are processed from plants and waste products such as used cooking oil and wood chips, but their production can carry environmental costs.
