HURKETT – There is no silver bullet to reverse the forestry sector’s downturn, says MPP Kevin Holland, the solution is more like silver buckshot. The associate minister of forestry and forest products announced a $850,000 investment in four Indigenous-led projects in the region. “The programs that we have announced today…are good examples of how we are finding alternative uses for our forest biomass to replace that void that was left as a result of the downturn in the paper market,” Holland told Newswatch in a press conference on Friday. Webequie First Nation, the Wanagekong Biiwega’iganan Clean Energy Corporation and Constance Lake First Nation will each get $250,000 for their biomass projects. Webequie First Nation is planning to develop a community-operated 25-megawatt electricity facility powered by forest biomass.
