Christy Clark takes a deep dive into the raging Canada-U.S. trade war with Kim Haakstad, President of the B.C. Council of Forest Industries. Haakstad has been on the front line of U.S. trade negotiations in Washington D.C. recently representing the forestry sector. She has a lot to share about protecting the future of our resource economy in this uncertain time. Haakstad has worked tirelessly in advocating for economic growth in western Canada for the past 30 years. She notes that even before U.S. President Donald Trump came along, tariff threats have been a common feature with our No. 1 trade partner. But B.C. lumber products are unique and preferred by American homebuilders, so why are they treated as competitors only to drive up prices for regular homebuyers. Haakstad also tells Christy there’s a lot more Canada can be doing to help resource industries succeed, including sensible regulation and conservation policy.
