A major wildfire burning near Konitsa in northwestern Greece has put communities and protected forests at risk, forcing authorities to concentrate resources on stopping its advance through the rugged Northern Pindus landscape. The blaze started on Mount Trapezitsa on August 31 and later expanded after strong flare-ups. On Sunday, according to local media from the Epirus region, a massive firefighting operation is currently mobilizing 170 firefighters, 53 forest commandos, and 30 local volunteers, supported by 13 aircraft and over 70 ground vehicles. Local authorities and the Greek Armed Forces are also assisting with heavy machinery and water trucks to construct firebreaks, while the special Epirus drone unit has been deployed for the very first time to actively map the fire fronts. …Steep slopes and the lack of ground access have limited where firefighters can operate. Their immediate priorities are to prevent the flames from moving downhill toward Konitsa and to protect the wooded area above the town.
