THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay is benefiting from an infusion of government cash as it continues to plant thousands of trees, largely to mitigate the destruction of the urban forest canopy caused by the invasive emerald ash borer. The federal government and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities have announced details of a recent round of funding under the Growing Canada’s Community Canopies program. Ottawa provides the money, but the program is delivered and administered by the FCM. Thunder Bay has received $4.6 million, one of the largest allocations in the country, and is using the money to plant 33,550 trees and seedlings. According to the FCM, the project includes targeted planting across city parkettes, waterfront lands, wetland areas, and urban infrastructure. Cory Halvorsen, the city’s manager of parks and open spaces, said the city applied for the funding over a year ago, but only recently received word it had been approved.
