Washington, D.C. and Ottawa, ON—The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a new regulation focused on deforestation free supply chains. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) has been proactive in analyzing how the SFI Standards can provide value in demonstrating compliance with EUDR. SFI agrees with the EUDR’s goal of avoiding global deforestation and degradation. SFI-certified forest products from Canada and the United States remain an important supply to Europe and we are highly motivated to demonstrate the relevance of sustainability tools, like SFI certification, and to provide guidance as the EUDR is implemented. However, the EUDR presents several challenges, including achieving a clear and common understanding of forest degradation and addressing considerable data requirements related to geolocation. It is critical that we work together … not only avoid negative impacts but also deliver positive contributions to the long-term health of people and the planet.
