Donald Trump is being pushed to use the new EU-US trade deal to axe plot-by-plot traceability for American forest products, the rule Europe’s deforestation regulation keeps on every US shipment from 30 December even with the country rated low risk. That is according to a new letter, addressed to the President and copied to Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, which more than 1,000 members of “the American forestry community” signed on 26 August. …“We ask that you press the EU to fully recognize the United States as a low-risk country based on our proven record of forest stewardship,” the letter states, underlined in the original, before asking him to demand “the removal or substantial revision” of compliance requirements it calls unnecessary and burdensome. The opening it names is the European Parliament’s final vote on 16 June for the agreement struck at Turnberry last July, whose framework commits the EU to “work to address the concerns of US producers and exporters”.
