The Snowy Mountain wildfire remains at an estimated 13,359 hectares as crews continue to work towards controlling the blaze. Fire information officer Noelle Kekula said along with lightning and winds, the storms Saturday also brought some rain. “I don’t know how much we got, but I do know we got a little bit, but not enough to give us what we were hoping for, that significant amount of rain we always pray for,” said Kekula. The winds were gusting high enough that the helicopter crew got grounded but the containment measures seemed to be working. “It still stayed within our objective areas,” said Kekula, noting that because of the steep rocky terrain, crews are using a variety of methods, including handguards and wet lines.

QUESNEL, B.C. — Residents in and around the western edge of Quesnel, B.C., were prepared to leave at a moment’s notice as wildfires raged on nearby and flames from blazes northwest forced almost 90 people from their homes. Emily Epp of the Cariboo Regional District said helicopter evacuations were needed for at least four families on Saturday when the wildfire cut off access to a forestry service road. …later, a new evacuation alert was added for nearly 2,000 more residents in an area southeast of the existing order, about an hour’s drive west of Quesnel. Sylvain Gauthier, Quesnel’s fire chief, said 2,700 residents in western Quesnel are already under an alert as they prepare for a possible city-wide evacuation. …Epp said the majority of the wildfires in the area were caused by the massive, two-day lightning storm, which ignited fires west of Quesnel to as far as 300 kilometres west in Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park near the coast.

VANCOUVER—Lightning strikes caused 145 new wildfires to ignite across the province on Saturday, according to the BC Wildfire Service, with an additional 17 fire starts by early Sunday afternoon. That brings the number of active blazes up to 595 in the province, said Kevin Skrepnek, chief fire information officer. “There were mostly small spot-sized fires,” he explained. “Given how widespread the fires are, all six of our fire centres are fully engaged.” There are 40 fires of note, including the 13,000-hectare Snowy Mountain fire near Keremeos and the 180-hectare Nanaimo Lakes fire 13 kilometres south of Nanaimo. One man was killed fighting the blaze earlier this week. The southern third of the province saw the “vast majority” of new wildfire starts.

As two major fires merged in northwest B.C. overnight, firefighters have had to contend with several new blazes that popped up in the southeast and the Okanagan region. Three significant new wildfires were ignited Thursday in the southeastern corner of the province, including a 35-hectare blaze just 10 kilometres from the Salmo-area site of the Shambhala Music Festival — an annual electronic music event that was threatened by wildfire last year. The B.C. Wildfire Service says the festival isn’t in any immediate danger this year, unlike in 2017, when its grounds were placed on evacuation alert.  Large new wildfires are also burning northwest of Creston, within two kilometres of Highway 3, and northwest of Radium. Two evacuation alerts have been issued in connection with the three southeastern blazes, including one for the McArthur Creek area, southeast of Salmo, and another for the Cross River/Nipika Mountain Resort areas.

Two massive northern B.C. wildfires merge, destroying 32 buildings

Two large fires burning in northern B.C. have merged into one, now covering some 300 square kilometres near the Telegraph Creek area. The merged Alkali Lake and South Stikine River fires have so far destroyed 32 buildings in and around the Tahltan First Nation, with up to 45 per cent of the remaining buildings damaged by fire. “Most of the structures were family homes, both on and outside of the reserve,” said Chad Norman Day, president of the Tahltan Central Government. “It’s going to take years to rebuild what’s been lost, and it’s going to take decades for the land to be restored to where it was before, because we’ve lost a lot of forests.” Day’s own family ranch, which has been passed down generations, was damaged in the fire. “That’s been quite devastating for us, but at least our home is safe,” he said.

More wildfires are burning in British Columbia in 2018 than in past years but the total amount of timber burned is well below average, a wildfire official says. “It’s very difficult to directly compare one fire season to another just based on the statistics alone, because the stats only tell part of the full story,” said Ryan Turcot, spokesman for the BC Wildfire Service. Across the province, 476 wildfires were burning Thursday, including 39 new fires sparked the previous day, while 1,565 have been recorded so far this year, well above the average of 1,130 expected by this point in the season, Turcot said.  “In terms of area burned, we are still sitting at about 75 per cent of what the average would be for this time of year,” Turcot noted. … “But that doesn’t …factor in things like the human impact of wildfires, the proximity … to communities or to people and property,” Turcot said.

A cooling trend is forecast for B.C., but provincial firefighting officials say the change in the weather is likely to be accompanied by intense lightning capable of igniting more forest fires. Kevin Skrepnek, B.C.’s chief fire information officer, said Wednesday the heat should let up across the province by Friday, but with that comes forecasts of thunderstorms, lightning strikes and only small amounts of rain. He said the amount of rain in the most recent forecast is between three and five millimetres, which is not enough to ease the extreme fire conditions across B.C. “The real day we are focusing on right now is Friday,” he said from Kamloops. “We do expect a pretty dramatic shift in the weather.” …”Unfortunately, the cold front that is going to bring about increased winds and… some thunderstorm activity with it,” he said. “We are bracing for it to be a challenging day.”

The Nanaimo Lakes wildfire is still growing, but firefighters are getting a better handle on that growth. The fire southwest of the city grew to 179 hectares as of Wednesday evening, but it’s now considered 25 per cent contained, according to B.C. That’s the hard part because of the terrain.” …MacPherson said the message the fire centre really wants to get out is for members of the public to “smarten up,” as the Nanaimo fire and two fires that broke out in the Alberni Valley are all suspected to have been human-caused.

More than 400 people from the sprawling Municipality of Killarney were also ordered to leave. Henvey Inlet First Nation residents have returned home, and the ministry says it’s working to determine when other evacuees can safely return.

California is no stranger to fire. The temperate winters and reliably dry summers that make the Golden state such an attractive place to live are the same conditions that make this region among the most flammable places on Earth. But even for a region accustomed to fire, the continuing wildfire siege has proven unprecedented. Although it is only early August… intense fires have already burned vast swaths of land throughout the state… California already has the largest dedicated wildland firefighting agency in the country by far… But given the inevitability of wildfire, thousands of other vulnerable communities will need to follow this lead or face a repeat of tragedies on the scale experienced in Santa Rosa, Ventura, and Redding over the past year. In the era of megafires, our choice is clear: find new solutions or face even greater disasters.

A fire raging in Northern California has become the largest in modern state history, the state’s fire agency said on Monday. The Mendocino Complex Fire, which is burning northwest of Sacramento, topped 283,000 acres on Monday, making it the most sizable California fire in a century of record-keeping. “It’s not a good sign,” said Lynne Tolmachoff, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire. She noted that the state was only in the middle of its fire season, with the worst fires often occurring later in the year, as the land becomes increasingly dry and weather patterns create windy conditions. “We’ve got a long road ahead,” she said. The Mendocino Complex Fire overtook last year’s Thomas Fire, which ate up nearly 282,000 acres.

GRANTS PASSIt was a mixed bag on the Taylor Creek Fire on Wednesday. The fire grew to 31,600 acres after making a run to the west, while at the same time fire teams made good progress in containing the fire and protecting structures in the Rogue River and Galice area. No structures were burned at Indian Mary Park, a popular campground along the Rogue that had been evacuated earlier this week. And firefighters have been able to hold the blaze and not allow it to jump the river. The Taylor Creek Fire is 30 percent contained. It remains about three miles from the popular river village of Galice. “We were happy with how it went yesterday,” fire spokeswoman Lisa Rice said.

Portugal’s Prime Minister has warned that a massive fire burning out of control in the Algarve tourist region will take many days to put out, as authorities battled near record temperatures. …Environmentalists are pointing the finger of blame at eucalyptus trees, a native Australian species first introduced in Europe in the late 18th century. It thrived in Portugal, where the fast-growing species was later used in reforestation and to drain swamps. It’s now the most common tree in Portugal. But eucalyptus oil is highly flammable and burning leaves and bark are easily carried by the wind. “We’ve got to do something about the eucalyptus,” Ken Mandsfield, an Algarve resident originally from the United Kingdom, said. ”That’s the problem. It’s like living next to a can of petrol. You don’t want that.”

Firefighters and anxious residents braced Tuesday for a fifth straight night of battling a major wildfire that is racing across tinder-dry forested hills in southern Portugal. The blaze is sending high plumes of smoke across the Algarve region’s famous beaches and bringing criticism of authorities for failing to halt the flames. A strong seasonal wind from the north known as a “nortada” was driving the fire south toward Silves, a town of about 6,000 people, after it narrowly missed the smaller town of Monchique. Several hundred people were evacuated, and 29 were hurt, one seriously, officials said.
