Ontario wildfires rage as B.C. wildfire season ramps up

Insurers are monitoring about 75 wildfires in northern Ontario this that have resulted in mandatory evacuation orders or alerts in the cottage country districts of Parry Sound and Sudbury, among other areas. “Based on what we are seeing, there aren’t too many fires threatening many areas that are inhabited,” Pete Karageorgos, director of consumer and industry relations (Ontario) at Insurance Bureau of Canada, told Canadian Underwriter Monday. “Obviously, there are some cottages and properties that were ordered to evacuate because they were primarily water access, which would indicate that they are likely seasonal for the most part — but you never know. We are monitoring this. There are so many fires, it’s a question of how inhabited are the areas that are of the most concern.”

A total of 23 firefighters from the Northwest Fire Centre were deployed to Ontario and Quebec last week to help with firefighting efforts in those provinces. Parts of eastern Canada have been dealing with an unusually brutal wildfire season this summer. The northeastern Ontario community of Temagami has been put on evacuation alert, while other residents around the region have been already been forced out of their homes after lighting-caused fires blew up faster than expected. Another 60 or so active fires were burning across Quebec last week. One initial attack crew – made up of three firefighters – was deployed on July 9 to Ontario while a unit crew – made up of 20 firefighters – was deployed on July 11 to Quebec.

Thunderstorms a double-edged sword for crews fighting forest fires in northeastern Ontario

Firefighting crews from across the country are pitching in to stave off a cluster of fires in the northeast, while more potential lightning strikes are becoming a concern for the area. In its most recent update Friday afternoon, Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports there are 60 active forest fires in the Northeast region. Of those, 22 are not yet under control, while 38 are either being held, under control or being observed. “Relative humidity is higher in the region this morning, this is effectively reducing the fire activity and allowing our crews to make good progress,” stated the ministry in a release. “Although [rain] may help to bring short-term relief to the fire hazard in some localised areas, it is expected to rebound quickly once the precipitation has subsided. There is a current risk of thunderstorms for today, which could bring more lightning fires.”

A wildfire expert says that among BC communities with more than 10,000 people, Nelson has the highest wildfire risk. Forestry consultant Bruce Blackwell of North Vancouver announced in Nelson two years ago that the city was among the top ten most vulnerable. Now he says he has updated his data and created a variety of different ways of describing the risk. The graph shown above is based on an analysis of the forest within ten kilometres of a city’s limits. Blackwell used GIS and a provincial fuel type inventory to analyze risk. …There are some smaller communities that are potentially at higher risk than Nelson but a fire would not affect as many people. Among Kootenay towns with fewer than 10,000 people, some, like Sparwood, Elkford and Fernie are in more danger than Nelson. …Blackwell says we should not leave it up to the government …he wants landowners to step up also.

A couple of locations in the East Kootenayare now being rated as having ‘extreme’ danger ratings for wildfire, as temperatures continue to range well into the 30s C. RDEK Fire Services-South Country alerted the public via Facebook earlier this afternoon that its coverage area is now rated extreme. “OK folks… we’re at the uppermost end of our scale!” The department stated. The BC Wildfire Service operates about 260 weather stations, including 48 in the Southeast Fire Centre, which send reports on an hourly basis. These hourly weather observations, supplemented by data from other agency stations, support fire weather forecasting and the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS). “The computer-based CFFDRS is the primary fire management decision aid in Canada. With it, fire managers can assess the potential for ignition, spread and burning intensity. Deadly wildfire near Yosemite National Park almost doubles in size to 9,300 acres

The terrain surrounding Mariposa County’s deadly Ferguson fire is a virtual tinderbox primed for disaster, experts say. On either side of the Merced River, south of Highway 140, hillsides are filled with trees that have been killed by five years of drought and a bark beetle infestation, according to state maps. The ground is carpeted with bone-dry pine needles. As crews battle to keep the 9,366-acre blaze from spreading into these ready-to-burn hillsides, some worry it could unleash the destructive power of last year’s Detwiler fire, which burned for five months through dead forest and destroyed 63 homes. …The combination dead or dying fuels mixed with fire poses an amplified hazard for firefighters, Williams said. “The biggest overall risk is that these dead trees have an increased risk of falling – themselves and their limbs falling on firefighters,” she said.

Twin wildfires raging through popular seaside areas near the Greek capital have torched homes, cars and forests and killed at least 49 people, authorities said Tuesday, raising the death toll after rescue crews reported finding the bodies of more than 20 people huddled together near a beach. Many people headed to beaches and the coastline to escape, fleeing flames and choking smoke. More than 700 people were evacuated by sea throughout the night, said Merchant Marine deputy minister Nektarios Santorinios, whose ministry is in charge of the coast guard. The head of Greece’s Red Cross, Nikos Oikonomopoulos, told Skai television a member of a Red Cross rescue team had told him the crew searching a seaside area northeast of Athens had found 26 bodies, apparently families, huddled tightly together, many of them hugging. The group is believed to have been discovered near several cars found charred outside a walled compound gutted by the fire.

Sweden is battling dozens of severe, drought-fueled forest fires raging across the country, despite the loan of firefighting planes and helicopters from its European neighbors. Thomas Aronsson, chief of operations for SITS, a specialist firefighting service based in Sweden, said Wednesday that fire service agencies were fighting around 80 fires across the country and lacked the necessary equipment.” We need tankers, we need helicopters — we don’t have enough supplies,” he told CNN. “There are 80 fires right now in Sweden, and there is no helicopter company or pilot in all of Sweden that’s not involved in fighting these fires.” “A lot of firefighters who currently have vacation have volunteered to come out and fight these fires,” Aronsson said. “It’s a little too early to say how it’s going to go. With such high temperatures, these are tough conditions to be fighting a fire.”

At least 11 wildfires are raging inside the Arctic Circle as the hot, dry summer turns an abnormally wide area of Europe into a tinderbox. The worst affected country, Sweden, has called for emergency assistance from its partners in the European Union to help fight the blazes, which have broken out across a wide range of its territory and prompted the evacuations of four communities. Tens of thousands of people have been warned to remain inside and close windows and vents to avoid smoke inhalation. Rail services have been disrupted. The Copernicus Earth observation programme, which gives daily updates of fires in Europe, shows more than 60 fires burning across Sweden, with sites also ablaze in Norway, Finland and Russia, including in the Arctic Circle. Norway has sent six fire-fighting helicopters in response to its neighbour’s request for assistance.
