CACHE CREEK, B.C.— Communities are still recovering from British Columbia’s worst wildfire season on record, one year after a fateful two-day period in July 2017 that sparked more than 100 fires and prompted the province to declare a state of emergency. Cache Creek Mayor John Ranta remembers a fire breaking out on July 6 near the Ashcroft First Nation and sweeping across the countryside the following day, as strong winds propelled it from the horizon to directly opposite the village office in about 20 minutes. …It was the beginning of a devastating wildfire season that ultimately forced 65,000 people from their homes, burned a record-setting 12,000 square kilometres of land and kept the province under a state of emergency for 10 weeks. Premier John Horgan said the anniversary was a time to remember that B.C. residents will always be there for each other in times of need.

The smell of smoke filled the air Thursday as the wildfire northwest of Sooke continues to burn. …It’s burning about 18 kilometres northwest of Sooke on privately managed forest land. Firefighters continue to battle a growing wildfire at Tugwell Creek outside Sooke, which by Wednesday evening had grown to 85 hectares in size. As of 5 p.m., the wildfire, burning on privately managed forest land about 18 kilometres northwest of Sooke, was considered out of control with zero containment, said Coastal Fire Centre spokeswoman Dorthe Jakobsen. The fire had grown considerably since Tuesday, when its size was estimated at four hectares. “There’s been significant growth [Wednesday] due to sustained winds,” Jakobsen said. “They didn’t drop off as we had hoped.” The wind tossed hot embers into new areas, meaning the fire is not only in slash but also in felled and bucked timber as well as juvenile and mature standing trees, she said.

A wildfire burning out of control near Hinton, Alta., has more than tripled in size in less than a day, fire officials said Thursday. The fire, about 15 kilometres southeast of the town of Hinton, now covers 1250 hectares, up from the 900 hectares reported earlier Thursday, and the 350 hectares reported Wednesday evening, said wildfire officials. “This morning there’s a bit of an inversion which makes it difficult to get a more recent size assessment, so it could be slightly larger than that,” said wildfire information officer Travis Fairweather. An inversion is when a lot of smoke at the head of the fire creates difficult flying conditions for those assessing the fire, he explained. Smoky conditions also make it difficult to use aircraft to fight the fire, Fairweather said.

Fire officials in B.C. are urging campers to exercise caution with campfires this long weekend to prevent human-caused wildfires. The B.C. Wildfire Service says last week’s record-high temperatures, widespread lightning storms and a dramatic spike in wildfire activity show how quickly the situation can take a devastating turn. Kevin Skrepnek, a spokesman for the B.C. Wildfire Service, said Thursday that crews were putting out the fires from last week and that there were no major wildfires of concern, thanks to cooler, wet weather. So far this season, crews have responded to 568 wildfires in B.C., of which about 40 per cent are believed to have been caused by people.

KELOWNA – Following a heatwave that covered most of the province, you may be wondering where our wildfire danger rating sits right now, especially compared to last year’s record-setting season. The BC Wildfire Service confirms in the early part of this week, the province saw significant lightning activity which resulted in nearly 100 new fires. Chief Fire Information Officer Kevin Skrepnek says crews got a bit of a scare on Wednesday when lightning storms swept across many areas of the Interior and Vancouver Island. It was a similar set-up that launched last year’s record fire season. “As I said, most of them never made it and [were] a small size. We’ve been able to get on them before they’ve had a chance to grow into anything of huge concern.”

…Sonoma County’s hillsides are particularly picturesque and expensive. But their history of fire and development is instructive because it is so typical. And now, some officials and residents have begun to wonder aloud whether some fire-prone areas are too dangerous to inhabit. The population in Sonoma County’s wildland-urban interface, the high-risk boundary zone between nature and the built environment, increased about 20 percent between 1990 and 2010, according to county records – a rate that an analysis by Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting found matches the national median. As of 2012, there were 46 million homes in these areas nationwide. In the half-century-plus between the Hanly and Tubbs fires, people arrived in Sonoma County knowing nothing of the wildfire past. Planners and builders, who did know the risk, trusted it could be managed with fireproof building materials and clearings around homes. But for some, the Tubbs Fire has shaken that faith.
