As mass timber construction (MTC) becomes increasingly popular in non-residential construction, its full carbon consequences are receiving a higher level of examination. Two recent independent studies attempt take a close look at MTC. Both end up with generally positive conclusions. A 2019 U.S. study compared an MTC building to both a hybrid MTC/concrete and a concrete building with “similar functional characteristics.” …“The results of this study reveal that replacing concrete and steel with CLT in the building structure can present significant environmental benefits. The major environmental benefits include an average of 26.5 per cent reduction in global warming potential.” The hybrid concrete/MTC building had similar results. However, there were some caveats and details that are important to note. …A 2021 comparative building study conducted in China came to much the same overall conclusion. …Unfortunately, neither study offered a full cradle-gate-grave analysis of mass timber.

The Athena Institute is pleased to announce the publication of North America’s first comprehensive technical guidance for life cycle assessment of construction works. Athena helped write this document, under the leadership of the the National Research Council Canada (NRC) and with input from a large stakeholder group. “National guidelines for whole-building life cycle assessment” fills a big gap in the practice of whole-building LCA. It interprets relevant standards, provides detailed instructions, addresses comparability and benchmarking, and more. It is NRC’s intention to pursue adoption of the document as a national standard. This document will go a long way towards improving quality and consistency of practice. Green building programs and policy can now point to this as a reference for their LCA provisions. Our current overhaul of the Impact Estimator software includes alignment with these guidelines.

A cruel sense of déjà vu hit the town of Lytton as the latest wildfire grew just northwest of the town. …To help understand and learn from the catastrophic events that occurred in the province last year, First Onsite conducted a survey of 200 B.C. residents that found 85 per cent were worried about wildfires.B.C. wildfires happen in cycles. Canada’s boreal forests have burned naturally since at least the last ice age. The ecosystem depends upon such recurring natural disturbance. …Discussions and action have taken place to protect, prepare and build communities to be more resilient to fires. Several strategies are being deployed. Modern building materials and techniques are much more resilient to fire damage, while also being sustainable. Many of these choices, such as cementitious siding in place of wood, metal roofing in place of shingles, and fire-smart landscaping can be the difference.

And if prefabrication practices are utilized, wood structures can be erected more efficiently than concrete ones. The case for wood is made even stronger because Ontario is facing a concrete shortfall due to stalls in production earlier this year and ongoing labour underages. Moreover, in a move intended to help deescalate the housing affordability crisis, timber construction is actually being encouraged here in Toronto.

Northvolt and Finnish forestry company Stora Enso plan to make sustainable batteries using lignin-based hard carbon on an industrial scale, the companies said Friday. …In the partnership, Stora Enso will provide its lignin-based anode material Lignode, while Northvolt will drive cell design, production process development and scale-up of the technology. Stora Enso is also conducting a feasibility study into the first industrial production of Lignode at the Sunila site. Northvolt in February bought an old Swedish paper mill from Stora to turn it into a cathode material factory by late 2024. Volkswagen Group has been investing hundreds of millions of dollars in Northvolt. Stora’s head of innovation Mikael Hannus said that commercial production of lignin-based products would be five to 10 years away.

Uruguay is opening the door to a sustainable transition in its construction sector. Having led the way in Latin America in transforming its energy mix over the past two decades – with 94% of its electricity generated by renewables between 2017 and 2021 – it is now laying the foundations for another sustainable shift, this time towards high-rise timber buildings. Two recent developments have boosted the sector: the construction, in Uruguay, of South America’s first plant manufacturing cross-laminated timber (CLT) – an engineered wood product seen by many as a sustainable alternative to concrete and steel – and the government’s announcement of a “roadmap” for the construction of social housing using timber frames. …according to a study by Yale University and the University of Washington, “using wood substitutes could save 14% to 31% of global CO2 emissions and 12% to 19% of global fossil fuel consumption by using 34 to 100% of the world’s sustainable wood growth.”
