The Trump administration is looking to finalize a repeal of a longstanding Roadless Rule with a public comment period that lasts until Sept. 19. …Environmental groups say removing the rule will threaten clean drinking water and allow for logging and roads on some of Oregon’s most iconic lands. Timber companies say that removing the rule will help mitigate wildfires, as well as support forest management moving to the hands of local officials. …The rule applies to 44.7 million acres in 10 Western states. …These are areas that have been off limits to logging and development for more than 20 years. The American Forest Resource Council says “rhetoric suggesting that rescinding the rule will result in unrestrained logging just isn’t based in reality.” Oregon Wild plans to focus on the importance of protecting areas with clean drinking water. …So far, the public comment board has recorded more than 98,000 comments.
